But this is Angel Bayou, where the gumbo is spicy, the ghosts are stubborn, and love has a way of getting the last word.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ MY PERSONAL BOOK REVIEW: Last Wish Motel by Alicia Hunter Pace
When Your Family Is Already in Everybody’s Business…and Death Apparently Changes NOTHING 😂
The minute I realized Last Wish Motel was giving me Louisiana, a Creole family, supernatural elements, romance, family secrets, a strong female lead, AND some dead relatives who apparently said, “Death? Baby, that’s merely a technicality,” I knew we were about to have a good time.
And Alicia Hunter Pace did not disappoint.
First, We Need to Talk About the Soublets…
One of my favorite parts of this book was actually the Soublet family.
As someone who comes from a Creole family myself, there were moments when I was reading these family interactions thinking:
Yep.
Mmmhmm.
Sounds about right.
Everybody in everybody’s damn business. 😂
The strong women. The opinions. The family history. The traditions. The food. The storytelling. The closeness. The unspoken rules. The way family business somehow belongs to EVERYBODY whether you requested assistance or not.
Baby…
I KNOW THESE PEOPLE. 😂
Obviously, no fictional family is going to represent every Creole family’s experience, including mine. But there was enough familiarity in the Soublet family dynamic that a lot of their interactions genuinely resonated with me.
And I have to give Alicia Hunter Pace credit for actually attempting to research the culture instead of just throwing some Louisiana seasoning on the page and calling everybody Creole.
Because chile… That’s been done. And we notice. 👀
Creole culture is complicated. Our histories are complicated. Our families can be complicated. Our spiritual traditions and beliefs are especially complicated. And this isn’t a topic for the weak. There are beliefs and traditions within Creole families that have been misunderstood, stereotyped, mocked, sensationalized, or straight-up ostracized by mainstream society.
But…
Those of us who know, KNOW.
That’s all I’m gonna say about that. 👀
I appreciated that the supernatural elements weren’t treated like some cheap ooooh, spooky Louisiana people gimmick. The story allowed family, history, spirituality, grief, belief, and tradition to coexist.
And THAT mattered to me.
Reese? Come On, Girl. 💜
I liked Reese.
She’s young, she’s a mother, she’s carrying responsibilities from every damn direction, and she’s still standing.
What I appreciated most is that she isn’t written with a permanent victim mentality. Y’all know that gets on my nerves. I can handle a heroine struggling. I can handle trauma. I can handle fear. What I cannot handle for 300+ pages is:
“Poor me. Someone save me.”
No ma’am. Reese has responsibilities, makes mistakes, has fears, and has put pieces of herself aside because LIFE has been life-ing. But there’s still a woman underneath all those responsibilities. Watching her begin to remember that she is allowed to want something for herself was one of my favorite parts of her character development. Being a mother doesn’t mean your dreams died during childbirth. And I loved seeing that explored.
And Then There’s Chase…
SIR. Come sit down. We need to talk.
Chase is successful, talented, attractive and carrying enough unresolved emotional baggage that Southwest would’ve charged his ass extra. And sometimes? That man worked my LAST nerve. There were moments when I understood exactly why he reacted the way he did. There were also moments when I wanted to reach into my Kindle and say:
“CHASE. USE YOUR BIG-BOY WORDS BEFORE YOU MAKE THIS WORSE.”
Because apparently communication is harder than performing in front of thousands of people. Who knew? 😂😂😂
But that’s also why I liked his development. He’s not introduced as Mr. Perfect Romance Hero and magically cured by the power of good sex. Thank God. Chase has to confront some shit. His childhood. His assumptions. His fears. His understanding of family. And some things about Reese’s world that absolutely DO NOT fit neatly inside his understanding of reality. That conflict worked for me because the book didn’t require him to suddenly become a completely different person.
There’s a difference between:
“I understand everything you believe.”
and
“I don’t understand this shit AT ALL, but I trust you.”
That distinction gave their relationship more emotional weight for me.
Now About These Damn Ghosts… 👻😂
THE LONG DEADS.
Ma’am. Why are y’all still here?! 😂😂😂
Imagine trying to figure out your career, motherhood, family drama AND romantic life while your deceased relatives are still clocking in for their shifts.
No.
YOU 👏🏽 ARE 👏🏽 DEAD 👏🏽
Please clock out. But did they? Absolutely not. These women have wishes. They have opinions. They have agendas. They have plans. And apparently the afterlife does not include a course on respecting boundaries. And you know what? I loved their meddling asses. 😂 The supernatural component added humor to the story, but underneath that humor was something deeper about ancestry, family history, grief, traditions, and the things that get passed from one generation to another. That made them more than a paranormal gimmick.
And Yes, We’re Talking About the Chemistry 🌶️
Reese and Chase have CHEMISTRY. Period.
They can be irritated. They can disagree. They can have approximately 47 unresolved emotional issues sitting between them. Their bodies? Do not give a damn. These are grown folks doing grown-folk activities. We’re not fading to black and pretending everybody went to bed holding hands and discussing Louisiana history.
🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 for me.
There is steam, but it doesn’t overpower the actual relationship or story. That’s my sweet spot. Give me the spice. But also give me a damn PLOT. Thank you.
So Why Only Four Stars?
Because y’all know I’m stingy with that fifth star. There were portions where the pacing slowed down for me. There’s a LOT happening here: romance, family dynamics, generational history, supernatural elements, personal growth, parenting, trauma, and enough emotional baggage to fill the motel itself. Most of those pieces worked together, but there were moments when I wanted the story to MOVE. I also would’ve liked a little more emotional payoff toward the end. Listen, if I’m going to spend an entire book watching two stubborn people work through their shit, I want my dessert afterward. Don’t give me dinner, clear the plates and start turning the lights off.
WHERE IS MY CHEESECAKE?! I wanted just a little more time to enjoy where everything landed.
💜 Trulee V’s Final Verdict: ⭐ 4/5 Stars
Last Wish Motel surprised me with how much of the family dynamic resonated personally. I enjoyed Reese. I fussed at Chase. I adored the family chaos. I appreciated the cultural research. I laughed at the Long Deads. And somewhere along the way, I realized these fictional people had pulled me into their damn family business too. Typical.
If you enjoy small-town romance, strong heroines, complicated heroes, motherhood, family drama, Louisiana settings, Creole influences, supernatural elements, ancestral meddling, humor, emotional growth, and some grown-folk spice, I’d absolutely recommend giving Last Wish Motel a try.
And if you come from one of those families where the ancestors may technically be gone but somehow their opinions are STILL running shit…Baby.
You already know. 👀😂 No further explanation required. Those who know…KNOW.
Until the next chapter… Happy Reading! 📚💜

ARC Review: I received an advance copy of this book. All opinions, side-eyes, laughs, complaints, ghost commentary, and ratings are completely my own.
I have two goals this season: 1. Prove to the Seattle Serpents I’m more than just the old guy. 2. Don’t fall for my captain’s stepsister.
In my defense, I had no clue who Vanessa was when we met. We were in a different city. How was I supposed to know she’s my teammate’s stepsister?
Now she’s in Seattle, still healing from her divorce, and apparently, she’s here to stay. That would be fine if I didn’t still think about our night together every waking hour. Thing is, I do think about it—constantly—and then when I find out she needs a place to live, I offer my spare room.
We’re roommates, and that’s it. Until it isn’t.
We’re just having fun, that’s all. Except nothing feels like just fun. It feels far too real and far too serious, and her stepbrother has no idea about us living together or that I’m slowly falling for her.
So much for focusing on the season…
TOP SHELF is a standalone hockey romance novel. There’s an age gap, a veteran player falling for his teammate’s stepsister, a woman recovering from a broken heart, sneaking around, a one-night stand, one bed, lotsof steam, ridiculous group chats amongst teammates, and a happy ending.

Who accidentally has a one-night stand with her alumni band director?
Yep. Me.
I know what you’re thinking. Whoops! I slipped on some valve oil and accidentally landed on his baton during a rousing chorus of Stars and Stripes Forever.
That’s not quite how it went.
But the alumni band director is really, really skilled with that baton, if you know what I mean.
So what am I supposed to do now, as I walk into the morning’s rehearsal — three feet from the podium because of course I play piccolo — and find the guy I ghosted on this morning … right there, smiling at me like he remembers exactly what tempo I prefer?
He’s perfect. Too perfect.
He’s a widowed dad of two adorable little kids that — oh, by the way — he forgot to mention.
But I also haven’t mentioned the seventeen-year-old I live with, either. He’s not my boyfriend. I’m his guardian. He’s autistic and non-speaking, and he’s been my whole world since I was nineteen.
I want Mr. Band Director. He wants me. Nothing — not the secrecy, not the awkwardness, not the 500 miles between his life and mine — will make this chemistry stop.
Except for three pesky little things: the secrets we’re hiding from each other. Three very human secrets.
I’ve never felt so seen before. He gets me. I get him. But we’re buried in responsibilities and loyalties that get in the way. When I’m with him, I can play. Really play.
And not just music.
He can’t quit his job and move his kids to be close to me. I can’t uproot a fragile teen who needs round-the-clock care and is still mourning his parents. The odds are stacked against us.

Touch Her and Die by Gracie Monroe Genre: Dark Mafia Romance Review by Mz Trulee V | Trulee V’s Spot Book Blog
Listen, y’all. I love me a dominant, possessive, morally questionable mafia boss who operates under the philosophy of “What’s mine is MINE, and touching it is a death wish.” And baby, Dimitri understood the assignment! 👏🏽🔥 Gracie Monroe said, “Let me introduce you to a Pakhan,” and apparently, I said, “Well, don’t mind if I do!” Because here I am, four stars later, fully invested in a world where red flags aren’t warnings. They’re apparently decorative accessories. 🚩😂 Let’s talk about Dimitri, shall we?
Sir. SIRRRR.
This man doesn’t just walk into a room. He COMMANDS it. The dominance, the possessiveness, the dangerous energy, and that unmistakable touch-her-and-find-out mentality? Yes, please. I’ll take one fictional mafia boss with a side of questionable morals. Hold the judgment. 🤣
Dimitri is exactly the kind of character I expect when I pick up a mafia romance. He’s powerful, controlling, unapologetically dangerous, and accustomed to getting precisely what he wants. And what does he want? DANI.
Not tomorrow. Not eventually. Not after a reasonable courtship involving dinner, flowers, and a background check. Nope. This man operates on an entirely different timetable, and apparently, patience was NOT included in his Pakhan starter package. But what I particularly enjoyed was that Dimitri recognized something in Dani long before she fully understood what she’d gotten herself into. He knew she belonged in his world, even when she was still trying to figure out how the hell she’d ended up there. And honestly? That made their dynamic even more entertaining.
Now, Dani, my good sis. Let’s have a conversation. 😂 First of all, I absolutely LOVED that Dani wasn’t walking around completely oblivious to what was happening. When she dropped that Stockholm syndrome reference, I HOLLERED! Because GIRLLLLL! At least you recognize the potential psychological implications of your situation! 🤣👏🏽
Self-awareness is important, even when your common sense is fighting a losing battle against your attraction to a dangerous man. And let’s not pretend Dani wasn’t already a goner from the moment she laid eyes on Dimitri. Yes, her skills kicked in and ultimately saved his life. Yes, she was doing what needed to be done.
BUT BABY, SHE STILL HAD EYES! She knew exactly what kind of fine specimen of fictional danger was standing in front of her. What she didn’t fully understand was just how far this man was willing to go. And THAT, my friends, is where things get interesting. Because there’s recognizing that a man is dangerous, and then there’s discovering that the man you find attractive operates on an entirely different level of “I will rearrange the world if necessary.” Ma’am, you might want to buckle that seat belt. You’re not in Kansas anymore. 😂 But here’s what really made Dani work for me as a female lead. She wasn’t weak. She wasn’t helpless. And she certainly wasn’t interested in adopting a permanent victim mentality simply because she’d found herself entangled with a powerful mafia boss. Dani had a backbone, and I appreciated every bit of it! She stood her ground, questioned her circumstances, and found ways to navigate a world that wasn’t originally hers. And THAT is the kind of female character I enjoy reading about. Give me a woman who can acknowledge the danger, recognize her circumstances, and still maintain some sense of who she is. Was she immune to Dimitri’s charms? Absolutely NOT. Let’s not get carried away. 🤣 But she didn’t completely disappear into his shadow, either. What made their relationship particularly enjoyable was how naturally Dani seemed to fit into Dimitri’s world, despite not coming from it. She was the missing piece to a puzzle she didn’t even know existed.
And Dimitri? Oh, he knew. He knew WELL before she did. That contrast between his certainty and her gradual realization added another layer to their relationship that kept me entertained. Now, let’s discuss the chemistry, because we are NOT skipping over that part! 🔥 Listen. When you combine a dominant Pakhan who doesn’t understand the meaning of personal space with a strong-willed woman who isn’t afraid to challenge him, what exactly do you expect? A peaceful afternoon discussing the weather? PLEASE. 🤣
The attraction was there, the tension was there, and the relationship had that delicious push and pull that makes mafia romances so entertaining. I particularly enjoyed watching Dani navigate the reality of Dimitri’s world while simultaneously realizing that the man himself might be considerably more difficult to resist than she’d anticipated. Because there’s something about a fictional man who knows exactly what he wants and makes absolutely no apologies for pursuing it. In real life? Sir, we’re calling somebody. Possibly several government agencies. In fiction? Turn the page, sis. I need to know what happens next! 📖😂
And before anyone comes for me, YES, I recognize the difference between fictional entertainment and acceptable real-life behavior. My degrees and common sense are still intact. We’re discussing BOOK BOYFRIENDS here, people. Let me enjoy my morally questionable fictional men in peace!
So, why four stars? Because I genuinely enjoyed this read! The character dynamics worked for me, Dani was a strong female lead, and Dimitri delivered the dominant mafia-boss energy I was looking for. I appreciated that Dani’s character wasn’t reduced to someone who simply needed saving. She had her own strengths, and those strengths contributed to the relationship rather than disappearing beneath Dimitri’s larger-than-life personality. I also enjoyed the progression of their connection and how Dani’s place in Dimitri’s world became increasingly apparent. The story kept me engaged, entertained, and invested enough that I am absolutely interested in continuing the series.
And that brings me to my next question… WHY STOP AT ONE PAKHAN WHEN THERE ARE MORE TO EXPLORE?! 👀🤣
Listen, Gracie Monroe, you cannot introduce me to this world, give me Dimitri, and expect me to pack up my Kindle and go home like a responsible adult. Absolutely not. I’ve already mentally pulled up a chair, poured myself a drink, and prepared to investigate the remaining mafia men. For research purposes, obviously. Very important literary research. Don’t question my methods. 😂
My final verdict? ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Touch Her and Die delivered an entertaining mafia romance featuring a dominant, possessive Pakhan and a strong-willed woman who refused to let her circumstances completely define her. Dimitri brought the danger, Dani brought the backbone, and their chemistry brought enough entertainment to keep me turning pages. Would I recommend it to readers who enjoy possessive mafia bosses, strong female characters, and romances where the male lead has absolutely NO intention of letting his woman go?
YES, MA’AM! Just remember to leave your real-life relationship standards at the door. We are visiting Fictional Red Flag Headquarters, where the men are dangerous, the women have backbone, and apparently, the only acceptable response to a problem is to call the Pakhan. 🤣
Great job pulling me into this series, Gracie Monroe! I’m looking forward to seeing what the next book brings. Because apparently, one dangerous Russian mafia boss wasn’t enough for my reading appetite. And on that note, I’m off to mind my business.
Which, naturally, involves getting all up in somebody else’s fictional mafia business. Until the next read, happy reading, book lovers! 💜📚
