I really enjoyed this read!

One of my favorite parts of the story was Lyra’s growth. She has every reason to fall into a victim mentality after everything happening around her, but instead, we get to watch her begin taking back her power. She starts recognizing that she has choices, that her voice matters, and that she doesn’t have to simply accept the life other people have decided she should have. THAT is the kind of character development I love. I don’t need my heroines to start off fearless. Give me a woman who discovers her strength along the way.

And then we have Lucan.

Sir. Rebellious Prince. I see you. 👀

I loved watching him stand firm in what he believes, even when doing so means challenging basically everything he was raised to believe and everything expected of him. There is something incredibly satisfying about a character realizing, “Yeah… my family has been doing this forever, but perhaps my family is WRONG.” 😂 Lucan isn’t rebellious just for the sake of being difficult. His choices actually mean something, and I loved how his journey toward choosing for himself mirrors Lyra’s journey toward doing the same.

And then…

COAL.

Coal, Coal, Coal.

What am I supposed to do with you already?! 😂

Because apparently one alpha wasn’t enough to keep my attention occupied. Here comes Coal with that whole bad-boy Alpha King who can still be a fair ruler energy, and unfortunately for me, that is exactly the type of fictional nonsense that gets me every single time.

What I really appreciate, though, is that Lucan and Coal don’t feel like carbon copies of each other. Their personalities, leadership styles, motivations, and relationships with Lyra are different. Yet somehow, the differences between all three characters create a balance that works. I am VERY interested in seeing how those dynamics develop because there is already enough tension brewing to keep me seated.

And yes, let’s discuss King Roderick for approximately five seconds.

That man is an ASSHAT. There. Discussion complete. 😂

Whatever consequences are headed his way, I will be sitting comfortably with my snacks waiting for delivery.

Another element I wasn’t expecting to enjoy quite as much as I did was the underlying storyline involving Lyra’s family. Their willingness to choose her, knowing there could be serious consequences if Roderick discovered their involvement, added another emotional layer to the story. Loyalty means something different when choosing someone could cost you everything.

Then those final chapters hit and suddenly I went from casually enjoying myself to:

YES, NORA!!!

I won’t spoil it, but the ending definitely turned up the energy and gave me that delicious “Ohhhh, so THIS is where we’re going?!” feeling that makes you immediately start thinking about the next book.

And of course, we cannot forget the Alpha/Luna steaminess.

Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable start to a shifter story that has plenty of room to grow. I loved the character dynamics, the themes of choice and empowerment, the family loyalty, the pack politics, and the fact that our main characters aren’t simply accepting the roles other people assigned them.

Lyra is finding her power.
Lucan is questioning tradition.
Coal already has me suspiciously interested.
Roderick can kick rocks.

And apparently I’m coming back for Book Two. 😂

If you’re a fan of shifter romance, Alpha/Luna dynamics, rebellious royals, complicated pack politics, family loyalty, strong female character growth, and some spicy paranormal romance, I’d definitely recommend adding this one to your TBR.
