Book Review: The Agreement (Unrestrained #1) by S.E. Lund

theagreement 3 Stars

BLURB:

“A letter to my sub:

You trust me completely to know what you need. And I do know what you need. I know what to whisper in your ear to make you need me even more. I know how to touch, where to touch, when to touch.

I know you.

You can relax completely with me. You can feel everything possible with me. You can respond with total abandon with me.

That is what I most desire.”

So begins an enticing letter from an anonymous Dominant to his new submissive.

While graduate student Kate McDermott waits in a Manhattan cafe to meet the Dom who will help with her research on BDSM, she reads the letter again, telling herself her interest is strictly academic. If she’s honest, Kate must admit it’s more than that – it’s a deeper need she can’t deny.

When Drake Morgan, MD, neurosurgeon, bass player, philanthropist walks through the cafe door to talk to her about the lifestyle, Kate is mortified. The son of her father’s oldest and best friend, Drake is far too desirable and too much a part of her social circle for comfort. If she decides to go through with this, can the carefully-worded agreement she draws up restrain their undeniable desire for each other?

Unable to resist his determined seduction, Kate begins an intense relationship with Drake that pushes all of her, and Drake’s, boundaries. Highly erotic, The Agreement is a love story that will stay with you long after you finish reading.

MY REVIEW:

I still haven’t been able to determine what I really feel about this book. I came into it with an expectation that a curious graduate student was interested in more than just researching the BDSM lifestyle, and more that she wanted her real curiosity quenched. Kate has a very interesting upbringing and some dark things that she tries to hide. When she sets a goal to enter the BDSM community using research as her catalyst, she never expected to run into someone so close to her societal circle.

Drake Morgan, MD is a very private guy, so when he agrees to help a grad student with her research on BDSM, he never expected it to be someone so close and someone he really wanted to meet. At the risk of his private life being exposed, Dr. Drake Morgan sets himself on a path that blurs the lines of Master and Submissive, but little does Kate know what she’s getting herself into.

Throughout this book I did struggle with how the D/s relationship evolved. As I’m used to more alpha doms and compliant subs, this D/s relationship was laughable to me. So here is where I’m up in the air. I’m still not sure if this lighthearted D/s relationship was what the author was going for or not. I picture Dr. Morgan as a complete hottie so I’m struggling to see how he was not able to take complete control. Then again Kate is this on again off again sub, who seems to want things her way….so instead of giving herself over completely I sort of felt this watered down D/s relationship. It was baffling that Dr. Morgan is supposed to be this awesome master, but I never really got a chance to experience that with him in this book.

Some scenes felt rushed and the secrets weren’t as deep as I was expecting but rather surface things that were brushed over once revealed. I really would have enjoyed more suspense around the past that Kate and Drake semi shared together. Now I’m not saying that this book was horrible, on average it was on alright book, there were just somethings that didn’t all the way click for me. I did get the second book in this series to see if perhaps more of the suspense in the story comes out and I get a chance to see the real Dominant Dr. Morgan.

A note from author Serena Bell…

Hold on Tight, my June release, is all about secrets. Mira Shipley’s secret baby, the one she conceived with army Ranger Jake Taylor before he vanished for eight years. The secrets Jake keeps from Mira even once he’s home from war, emotionally battered and physically injured. And the biggest secret of all—the one they’re both keeping—how strong their feelings are, and how fast they’re falling for each other.

So I figured it was time to let one secret out of the bag: Hold on Tight’s fabulous cover. Without further ado, here’s the first peek at Mira and Jake:

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Hold on Tight by Serena Bell

A Loveswept Contemporary Romance

On Sale June 17, 2014

In Serena Bell’s heartwarming novel, a young mother and a battle-scarred veteran must decide if they can rekindle the sparks they once shared.

Fighting for his country gave Jake Taylor’s life shape and meaning. Now as an injured war hero he struggles to find purpose, until he runs into the gorgeous woman he dated briefly—and disastrously—before being deployed eight years ago. Turns out Jake doesn’t just need to figure out how to be a civilian . . . he also needs to learn how to be a dad.

Eighteen, pregnant, and totally lost, Mira Shipley couldn’t track down the soldier who fathered her child, so she put college on hold and focused on making a good life for her son. Now she’s determined to be something more than Sam’s mom, her parents’ daughter, or Jake’s girl—as hot as she finds her old flame’s take-charge attitude in and out of bed. Soon Mira and Jake realize that their passion didn’t disappear when Sam was conceived—and that instead of running away, sometimes it’s better to hold on tight.

ABOUT SERENA BELL

Random thought……..

I was sitting here and contemplating a few things, but more than anything I was remembering my grandmother. Today she would have been 83 years young, and although I miss her endlessly, I thank her for all of her support.

My granny was my biggest advocate and support. Even at a very young age, she saw that when other kids wanted to play, I was content with a book. I can remember her always saying that if enough people read books then the world might not be so ignorant. Not really knowing what that meant at that age, she was always there to fuel my reading fire. Her gifts to me were subscriptions to reading clubs like the Baby sitters club and yes Harlequin Romance novels. The fights between her and my mother were endless as they would argue over why my grandmother would let me read romance novels at the age of 9. Young age, yes I agree but I’m glad she did.

It was interesting reading romance novels and not having the slightest clue what some of the graphic details were but then it got me researching and asking questions. For those who knew my granny, she did not beat around the bush. Ask her a question and you will get a very real answer. And one that might leave you with you jaw on the floor from shock. Nonetheless everyone loved her for it. Granny was a big advocate of “give her the facts now so that she can make better decisions as she gets older”. Sex education came at a very young age with her, and there definitely wasn’t a stork involved nor birds and bees. lol

If I were an addict, books were my addiction and granny was my supplier. Feeding my habit every chance she got, from gifts for every occasion, to buying them at the book fair at school, to picking up books from the goodwill. Yes, I was addicted to them from the very beginning and the more I read the more my vocabulary increased (because I was looking words p in the dictionary that I didn’t know), which in turn improved my spelling. My elementary school couldn’t believe my state reading test scores were that of a college level student. I became familiar with To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies and authors such as Daniel Steele, Sandra Brown, Alice Walker, and so many others. Reading lead to poetry and poetry to writing. I broadened my mind by entering young author competitions in elementary school and winning, to writing essays that won contest in high school, to even writing my first young adult novel then (which is all handwritten in notebooks and unedited and unpublished).

I look back on these memories and all I can do is smile. Granny encouraged me to do that which I loved and have loved for as long as I can remember. I thank her for encouraging me and feeding my habit. Today I still read like 90 going north, and even review books and have a book blog (I never saw that coming). I’ve even started on a new novel. Reading is my solace, my comfort, and yes I get bitchy when interrupted from a good book. Reading is my escape from reality and always has been. There is nothing like black ink on white paper bounded together with a journey yet to be revealed (now this includes my Kindle). Later on Granny revealed to me that she used to do the same thing in which I found comfort in; devour a good book in a matter of hours only to start again with a new one. I miss her dearly, but I know that each time I start a new book, it’s like she’s there with me and I take comfort in that.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANNY!!!

She’s everything to me.
He sets my world on fire.
It’s our dirty little secret, and it’s about to blow our record deal sky high.
I’m Tommy Blade, the Prince of Punk Rock, and this is our story.

Tommy Blade is a man with a secret. It’s a secret he only shares with one person, Jessi Blade – and the men he surrenders to in the bedroom. Her only condition to their tumultuous sex life is that these men are one night stands. But when Angel Garcia enters his life, it’s like a match to gasoline.

Mega-talented punk rock singer Angel Garcia, with his smoldering ebony eyes, tight leather pants and unstoppable stage presence, is a man who is use to getting what he wants. He has his eyes set on Tommy Blade as his new lead guitarist, and as his life partner.

Jessi Blade, sympathetic to her husband’s bisexual needs, loves him enough to share him, but she never counted on Angel Garcia to test the threshold of her marriage. He makes her life hell . . . and heaven. He’s her damnation and her salvation. She wants to hate him. She wants to despise him. But, his charm and raw sex appeal are impossible to resist. Without warning, she finds herself falling in love with her husband’s gay lover.

At the height of it all, their punk rock band catapults to stardom.

Their lives are marred by secrecy, deception and sacrifice. Feelings of betrayal, backlash from the sensationalistic media and threats of blackmail send them down a hard road filled with tough decisions.

They aren’t your ordinary rock stars. They’re radical rock stars. And they have a big story to tell.

Excerpts

Excerpt #1

The faces changed since the last time he was there, but the intention was still the same. It wasn’t a place to socialize or partake in camaraderie or drop in for a drink on your way home. It was meeting place for men interested in casual sex. The backroom served as a shanty for a quick encounter. You could stop in, get your rocks off and be on your way in half an hour. It was a smorgasbord of testosterone, a buffet of muscle and beefcake.

Men flocked around him as soon as he walked through the door. They always did. A guy once told him that it was the mixture of his rugged jaw and strong upper body, offset by the innocence of his big blue eyes that made him so attractive. The ladies always said it was his long blond hair and the guitar.

Excerpt #2

He played for Jessi. He always did, and it made her feel like a queen. He sat back on his knees, nodded at her and they shared a smile. The spotlight was on the two of them as he rattled of the intricate guitar solo, and she felt every pair of eyes gravitate toward her. Gooseflesh rose on her arms and the pitter-patter of her heart made her feel like a teenager. She needed to cover her lips with her fingertips in order to suppress the jubilant emotions that bubbled up inside her. Every time he played for her, it felt like the first time.

“There’s no doubt in my mind, Kate, that this is going to be a very long term relationship. You are mine in every sense of the word. I want to—no, rephrase that—I need to own you, body and soul, but even more than that, I want you to own me body and soul. You’re the first thing I think of when I wake up in the morning and the last thing I think of before I fall asleep at night. I don’t care that this is fast, Kate, because fast or not this is fucking right; I feel it in my core. You are the other half of my soul and I don’t care who knows it or who judges it. In the end, all that matters is you and me.”

Teaser_1

Excerpt

My fingers curl around the knob and I open it an inch. A soft sigh escapes my lips. Weston. “What are you doin’ here?”

Weston runs his fingers through his hair and kicks the door open with his good foot. Both arms cross over his chest as he leans against the doorjamb. “That depends on if you let me in or not.”

Why is he here? Heat swarms my cheeks remembering everything we just done in that bathroom. Could he embarrass me anymore? “Why would I let you inside? It’s in the middle of the night.” I give him a good once over. “And you’re drunk.”

He reaches down and digs into his front pocket. He pulls out my cellphone and dangles it in front of my face by two fingers. “This is the reason you’d let me inside.”

What? I slap my palms against my pajama shorts and realize I really don’t have my phone. Dammit. Weston hums underneath his breath as he brings my phone closer to his face. “Looks like someone has a new text message.”

“Give it back, Weston.”

The edge of his mouth pulls up slightly. “Let me inside and I will.”

“Why? What’s in here that isn’t out there?”

Something passes over his face that I can’t pinpoint. “Let me inside, Roxanne.”

I felt that in-between my legs. That word slipping from that mouth is more than I can take. Keeping my eyes on his, I take a step backwards while opening the door wider for him. Something appetizingly wicked heats in those brown eyes.

With the help of one crutch, he wobbles forward. I watch as he shuts the door and locks it behind him. His gaze rolls over my small apartment and then back to me.

Taking his bottom lip in-between his teeth he places one arm against the wall. “Is he here?”

What? Who? Leaning closer he presses his cheek against my own. “Is he here?”

“Is who here?”

A stern grip cups my hip and guides me until I’m pressed against the wall. A strong wisp of alcohol heats my face. He’s definitely been drinking but for some reason he doesn’t seem too drunk. “Don’t play with me,” he whispers against my mouth. Is Blake here?”

Blake? Why would Blake be here? “Weston you’re clearly drunk–“

A groan slips from his clenched teeth and he presses his hand tighter around my hip. “Is he here?”

There is a demanding tone in his voice that makes a side of me quiver. “No.”

Ten rough fingers grip the nape of my neck and force my mouth upward. “Was he here?”

My thighs turn to goop. If he wasn’t pressing himself against me I’d probably fall. “No,” I whimper out.

Lowering his mouth to my ear, he breathes in. “Did he kiss you?”

I bite my lip and close my eyes. I’m burning up … everywhere. A hard weight is pressing against my lower stomach and it is slowly eating me alive. I don’t lie. And it’s mostly because I want to see his reaction. This aggressiveness is searing underneath my skin. I want it. “Yes, what’s it to you?”

There is a few short moments of silence. All I hear is his harsh breathing against my ear. Then he laughs. It’s a low chuckle that sets that fire ablaze inside of me. The hand on my hip lowers to cup my ass and the other slides up my throat to gently grip my neck. “You like him, Roxanne? You like the way he talks to you? The way he touches you?”

Anger rushes my throat and a painful lump beings to grow. Tilting my chin upward, I stare up at him. Those brown eyes bore into me and then lowering toward my lips. “Yes.”

Something wild darkens his eyes. He laughs beneath his breathe and presses the palm of his thumb against my bottom lip. “Does he touch you like this?” he whispers against my mouth. He squeezes my ass and presses me harder into him. And I feel exactly how excited he is pressed firmly against my stomach.

The truth is no one has ever made me feel this alive. Hormones that I haven’t felt in years are raging inside of me. “Answer me,” he hisses through his teeth.

No, he doesn’t.

Weston’s teeth grazes my bottom lip before he gently bites down. All my fingers clench into his biceps. “You’re drunk,” I whisper.

I can feel his growl surge through me. “Does it look like I’m fuckin’ drunk, Roxanne. Stop avoiding the goddamn question. Let me fuckin’ have you.”

Let me fuckin’ have you. Grabbing my back he pulls me closer so he can bury his face into my neck. My core is throbbing. I need this release. I need this friction.

“No, he doesn’t,” I whisper.

Weston squeezes me tighter and brings his lips to mine. “I didn’t think so.”

He watches me through hooded eyes while he drags the tip of his finger to the drop in the front of my shirt. Arching my back, I press my chest against him. My tender nipples rub against his hard chest and it makes my head dizzy. “I’m goin’ to show you how you’re supposed to feel when you kiss.”

God, I can’t think straight. Every atom in me is driving me toward him. Begging me to strip him out of those clothes and let him have his way with me. But everything is spinning in my mind. Ryan and Maddox. Weston’s reputation. One night wouldn’t hurt though, right? Just one night. But would one night be enough? Weston’s lips are hovering over mine as if he’s waiting on me to kiss him. To make the first move. I can already tell that there is no way one night will be enough. Those large hands. That full mouth. Tattoos and muscles. Can anyone say no to him?

Synopsis

Romance has met its most unlikely match-up…

Luke Bradford is a chocolatier on a mission. After moving his chocolate shop, and newly single life, to the quirky town of Cactus Creek, Luke wants nothing more than to devote all his energy into making his business a success—by taking the romance market by storm. But his grand plans get thrown for a loop when he locks horns with the feisty beer-brewing beauty next door who calls his ‘romantic idealism’ a load of fairytale bull. Soon, driving the woman sparking nuts becomes another wickedly fun priority he simply can’t get enough of.

In his defense, she’s addictively easy to incite…and plain impossible to resist.

Beloved local brewmaster Dani Dobson is beyond riled up. It’s bad enough the new shop owner in town comes locked and loaded with both a distractingly rugged charm and sexy flashing dimples, but the whole only-in-the-movies variety of romance he’s selling—the kind her world has been crushed by before—is really doing a number on her allergy to unrealistic clichés. What’s worse, he’s created an annoyingly clever ad campaign that dubs ‘beer joints’ like hers as the “cave where romance goes to hibernate.” The nerve of that man.

Combustible chemistry or not, damn it, this means war. The stakes…very likely, her heart.

Excerpt

“Don’t you dare laugh at me, you ass!”

“I wasn’t laughing. I was smiling.” The glare Dani shot him could’ve leveled a city.

His hand halted an inch from sliding into her hair again, or rather, an inch from her now fully visible teeth. “Why do I get the feeling biting a hunk of flesh out of me wouldn’t be beneath you”—Luke blinked, fascinated—“Did you just growl at me?”

While he was now showing her the same caution one would a feral cat, his heated gaze said he found her ferocity inexplicably sexy. “Yes, I was smiling about your drought; so sue me. I like the thought of you not remembering any kisses but mine.” His eyes roamed her face. “To hell with it, I don’t need all ten fingers…” He caressed her cheek and she felt her eyelids drift closed at the touch.

“Dani, you in there?” bellowed Javier, one of her cooks from the kitchen. “Can you bring out the—” His severed request morphed into a muffled howl, a high octave just below soprano. “Never mind,” he reneged in a squeaking gasp of male agony shortly after.

Dani winced, recognizing the audible footprint of Xoey’s handiwork. The mental image of Xoey de-balling poor Javier threw Dani back to the here and now. As reality rushed in, she could once again hear the bar noises sifting in under the door, smell the savory aromas from the grill, and see—even in the semi-darkness—that she’d been minutes from rounding a few of the bases with a perfect stranger.

Avoiding his eyes, she fiddled with her bar apron. “I should probably get back to work.”

“Right, of course.” He stood and helped her up. “Sorry, I never lose my head like that. Not sure what’s up with me…huh, that sounded a lot dirtier than I intended—” He stopped and grinned when a ripple of amusement tinkled past her lips.

She couldn’t help but chuckle. This was fun; he was fun.

As she rolled the liquor cart to the door, Dani racked her brain for a sexy comeback to keep the banter going. Not exactly her forte.

Luckily, she was saved from making a conversational ass out of herself when he abruptly stepped in front of the cart and said, “I know you have to get back out to the bar but I’ll never forgive myself if I let you walk out this door without getting you to agree to have dinner with me.”

He cringed in sheepish male hindsight. “Though I’d probably settle for at least getting your name.”

Right, names. Or the lack there of, in their case. The whole reason she’d stopped kissing him to begin with. She stuck an awkward hand out in belated greeting. “My name’s Danica. But everyone calls me Dani.”

He intertwined his fingers with hers and drew her in close, turning an awkward moment into an insanely sexy one in a few seconds flat. Lowering his head slowly as if to give her a chance to say no, he laid a soft, barely there kiss on her lips when she didn’t.

“Nice to meet you, Dani.” His two dimples flashed as he said her name. “I’m Luke.”

Their magical, movie soundtrack moment was interrupted, however, by a dread-filled, hushed voice on the other side of the door. “Dani?” Javier’s whisper was tinted with panic. “I’m really sorry but we need to get more coriander.” A low murmur joined his. “And cooking tequila too.”

Dani screwed her eyes closed in embarrassment and called out, “I’ll bring them out, guys.”

She was barely through her sentence when she heard the two of them scrambling away from the door. There was definite cursing in Spanish. Along with some praying.

The sound of lethal pointy-toe boots stomping after them was the obvious reason why.

“I really ought to get out there,” she groan-laughed. “Cooking with one hand while protecting their crotch from Xoey’s wrath probably isn’t all that safe. Or sanitary.”

“As a protective guardian of the same anatomy, and an avid non-fan of any variety of jockstrap cuisine, you have my sincere appreciation.” His earnest look caused another round of mirth to unwind through her. “Just so we’re clear,” he added quickly, “you do know a kiss after a dinner invite is a universal ironclad yes, right?” His tone was matter-of-fact, his eyes adorably optimistic.

“That so?” She let loose a grin and tossed out, “Did I agree to anything else?”

“Just a few other things I won’t be able to stop thinking about until our date,” he teased right back.

She stared at him for exactly one missed heartbeat before that whole bout of temporary insanity she’d been worrying about earlier flared up and caused her to do the most un-Dani thing ever.

She tackled him.

Well, she sort of just pushed him back into the storage room but in her mind it had been far more primitive. Hands on the ridges of his torso, she tugged him in for one final kiss.

And released him a long minute later with a whispered, “I’ll be thinking about those things too,” as she basically floated to the door.

Jesus Christ.” Luke’s tortured breath trailed close behind her.

By the feel of the rustling at the small of her back, he was attempting to adjust the fit of his jeans. When that resulted in apparent failure, he muttered in her ear, “You had to wait till after I finally got my soldiers to stand down from earlier, didn’t you?”

If there was a complaint in there somewhere, it was altogether undetectable.

And Dani was entirely unrepentant.

Wearing only my loose brown pants, I crawled into the most
comfortable bed I had ever known and sank into the soft down pillows. I had just
started to drift off when I heard a knock at the door. I’m going to kill Avis.
“What do you-“ I started until I realized it wasn’t Avis. It
was a stunning blonde with blue eyes. Khea.

“I’m sorry to wake you. I just- I had to see you.” Her arms
moved to wrap around my waist and hold me tight as I questioned if I was really
sleeping or not.
“Uh, do you want to come in?” We both knew the rules about being in someone else’s
room after hours, so I pulled her in and sat down on the edge of the bed, still
a little surprised she was there.
In the dim light her hair looked a little darker, but her
face was still sweet and there was no denying that the last two years had done
her well. Who would have thought such a beautiful young woman would come from
that skinny little girl in Lagodon?
“How’d you know I was back?” I asked her, trying to appear
less tired or shocked than I was.
“A friend told me.”
“I didn’t think you-“ Cared? It wasn’t the right word, but I
was beyond amazed that she was interested in my whereabouts. I hadn’t seen her
since that night at the Moonwater and it had changed everything for me since
then. But for her, I wasn’t aware that she had been affected in any way.
“Ride with me tomorrow?”
“Uh, yea, of course.” It was a struggle to cover how little
I wanted to wait. I would have given anything to have her stay.
A wide smile erupted across her sweet lips as she said, “meet
me at the lake at noon.” With a lingering kiss on my cheek, she walked back
through the door and disappeared into the dark stone corridor.
What just happened?
I hadn’t seen her in person in years, and we were hardly close before that. And
now she arrived in my room in the middle of the night and kissed me on the
cheek. Was it a kiss like a friend would give another? Or more? I couldn’t make
any sense of it, but there was only thing I was sure of. I would be at the lake
at noon if it was the last thing I did.

MY REVIEW:

This book was a struggle initially for me as I was trying to get into the story. I didn’t necessarily get the OMG I can’t put this book down, but I did find myself still reading as there were questions in my head that needed to be answered from the beginning. The biggest one was “Where the hell are they going?” lol I know this question seems insignificant, but if you decided to read this novel, you will understand why that was my question. There were points in the book where i wished the author would have spent more time giving details or laying the foundation. Some of the book felt really rushed as though there wasn’t enough time to talk about what was happening and I believe it was because of that notion that someone how I felt cheated as if important points in the story were missing. Lots of the events that happened in the novel all happened so quickly whereas it reduced the probability of the readers truly engaging and enjoying the journey. Overall the story was a decent read and some what easy to follow, and ending was surprisingly better than the beginning of the book. I did enjoy the characters in the story including the bad ones…lol. They had a sort of camaraderie that really help transport the book and made it what it was. Though Lark had my attention, I really liked Khea’s  character. I must say, despite the fact that I did struggle reading this book in the beginning, as I continued to read things became more of an element of surprise.  Remember my question that initially kept me reading?  The author did have a way of making me feel like one of the characters in which I had to take the journey to the school with them, with absolutely no idea of what was going on or what to expect. If you like fantasy then this is a good book to read.

You wanted me then, now you can have me. Just promise you’ll Keep Me…

 LB teaser #1

Chapter 1

Marcus

I, Marcus Grayson, am a man-whore.

How did I know this?

“Marcus M. Grayson, you’re a man-whore!”

See what I mean?

My sister, Riley, shrieked through the house, searching for me. I knew it was only a matter of time before she chewed me out for this one. I may have taken it too far with Fiona, but she was asking for it—practically begging for it even. She wanted me—a lot more than I wanted her—but who was I to deprive an attractive, horny woman of what she so obviously desired?

Even if she was a married woman.

Oops.

“Marcus, where the hell are you? I’m going to wring your tattooed neck when I get my hands— ” Her voice grew closer as she neared my hiding spot behind the couch in the living room. “There you are!”

I couldn’t hide forever. “Hey, Ry. Where’s the fire?” The innocent act was so not going to work this time. Her ears could have been smokestacks; big, steaming clouds billowing out with rage.

“Cut the shit, Marcus. You crossed the line this time. What were you thinking? Fiona just got married three months ago! Her marriage is going to be over. Her husband’s gonna kick your ass.” Her hard-ass, reprimanding, mom-like demeanor faded for a second as she smiled in amusement over her last remark.

“Yeah, I’d like to see him try. Besides, it couldn’t have been much of a marriage. . . the girl had her hands in my pants during dinner, Ry. What was I supposed to do?”

“Not fuck her. That’s what you were supposed to do. Stay away. Think with the head on your shoulders, for once! Jesus, Marcus! She’s my friend. Well, she was. Now she’s never gonna talk to me again.”

I’d seen this look one too many times. I didn’t mean to do it—over and over again—but I couldn’t help it if all of her friends were needy sluts.

“I’m sorry, Ry. I really am, but. . . ”

“Don’t apologize to me. You should call Fiona and apologize to her.”

“Apologize my ass! She’s a grown woman who was fondling my goods during her main course. I’m just a man-whore, remember? I gotta live up to my reputation.”

“Well, you’re doing a pretty damn good job of that.”

And this is how it goes. Every time Riley brought me out with her and her friends, it ended the same way. It wasn’t even fun anymore. It was predictable. The result was always the same—a one-nighter with a girl who would go into hiding or lose my sister’s number afterwards. Or worse, hound her for mine, wanting another go at it or the chance to tame me and drag me into a relationship.

It was never going to happen. Period. End of story. I didn’t want that. I was content with my whoredom and that I had a new face to wake up to at least three times a week. And my sister was a glutton for punishment for repeating the same foolish behavior, time and time again.

I loved that we were close. Hell, she was my best friend, but she should have known by now that if she brought me around there was a one hundred and ten percent chance that I was going to sample the merchandise. And I loved me some merch.

Man-whore had been my title for a while. But, of course, it wasn’t always that way. Every guy like me has to start out somewhere, and by somewhere, I mean nowhere. There was a time when I was just some geeky, pre-teen virgin, eyeing the merch with no chance for even the teensiest sample. Those girls didn’t know it, but at thirteen their eighteen-year-old bodies were better than any Playboy magazine or Spice flick. These girls were the real deal—the girl next door types, the seemingly innocent beauties, teenagers blossoming into women right before my very eager eyes.

I had no shot in hell with those girls. I was an idiot to think I did, but even back then I had what all my sister’s friends would call “the cute factor.” The charisma to command a room and make myself memorable. I was the adorable, funny, younger brother who hung around to entertain them while they were getting ready to go out on the prowl for the men who would be getting samples, or the whole damn cow for all I knew. They would pinch my cheeks as they walked out the door in their skintight jeans and skimpy, cleavage-showing tank tops, always laughing at the skit I’d performed to keep them around my kitchen table long enough to muster up a fantasy for that particular lonely night.

My sister was to blame. It was all her damn fault. She was flaunting her friends in front of me like dangling a fresh, fleshy carcass for a starving lion. I could have stayed young and innocent a lot longer if it weren’t for those girl-women traipsing around my house night after night.

Riley snapped me back to the present with one of her favorite redundancies. “What am I going to do with you, Marcus?” Noble older sister strikes again.

What was I supposed to tell her? I had no intention of changing my ways anytime soon. What was that expression? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. “Don’t worry about me, sis. Worry about Fiona. Such a sin. She was a hot piece of ass.”

I ducked, avoiding the waste-of-money accent pillow she convinced me to get, flying towards my head. “You’re gross. You know that?”

“That’s not what she said.” My eyebrows did a silly dance above my eyes. Getting under her skin was so amusing.

“Seriously, Marcus. You think you’ll ever settle down? Dad worries about you. I worry about you. This is going to get old soon.”

Really? I couldn’t imagine any of it getting old. Not the thrill of the chase—not like they ever really made me chase them. Not the sheer delight in knowing I didn’t have to answer to anyone or wonder about their feelings. There were no feelings involved with one night stands. And they knew that’s what I was. Marcus Grayson, Bachelor for Life. I loved the ring to that. Maybe I should get cards made up.

“How many times, Ry? You’re like a broken freaking record. I don’t want what you want.” She wanted the knight in shining armor and the fairytale. I was content with everything on the other side of the pretentious castle. I was the Big Bad Wolf to Riley’s Red Riding Hood.

“Besides, I’m too shallow and I can’t think past five minutes from now. Who’s going to put up with that, huh?”

She eyed me sympathetically, a reaction I’d never understood. What the hell was there to be sympathetic about? I wanted this!

“There’s a lid for every pot. Alls I’m sayin’.”

Blah, blah, blah. That was chicks. That was what I was trying to avoid. I didn’t mind the women if it was my sister or. . . my mom. But unless they were riding me or letting me ride them, I had no use for the depth of a woman. Too complicated. Too complex. I was the complete antithesis. . .simple. I had to get Riley off this save-Marcus train. There was nothing worse than trying to convince the inconvincible. A change in subject was needed. “So. . .Sunday dinner with Dad?”

“Yup. He’s been nagging me all week.” She stopped to do her best impression of our grumpy, lonely father. “‘Make sure you tell that brother of yours. Who sees him anymore?’ You know, I’m tired of making excuses for you, Marcus. You need to make more appearances. He needs you. You were always his buddy. Mine was Mom.”

God, I’d rather she ream me out for sleeping around than make me look at her face when she spoke about Mom. It’d be four years soon, but Riley still held on to it like it happened yesterday. Her eyes welled up, telling me she was on the verge of bawling.

Instinctively, I pulled her close, one arm around her fragile shoulders. “I know. It sucks. I miss her too, but don’t do this now. She wouldn’t want you crying over her, she’d want you to rip deeper into me for screwing up your friendship. . .”

She lifted her drooped head, smacking her tongue with an audible tsk. When she slapped my hand away, I knew my work was done. “It’s always about you. That modeling gig is going to your head, little bro. Time for a change.”

Another thing I had no intention of changing. My agent called me day in and day out with bookings. When I was up to no good as a kid, my mom used to tell me I was lucky I was cute. She also used to say that I wouldn’t get by solely on my good looks. Turns out my mom was wrong about that part. I made a damn good living off my looks and had no problem showing off the goods for the right people. Hell, I showed off my goods for a lot of the wrong people too. But it was all good. Plus, the money was sick.

“Don’t you have somewhere to be, Ry? You’re bad for my ego.”

“Exactly! Maybe I should hang around all day and deflate it for you.”

As much as I loved the idea of chilling with Riley, I had shit to take care of. And by shit I meant figuring out which club to hit tonight. Beck was free and I hadn’t seen him in a while. He’d met a girl and things were getting serious, which meant the party was over. Beck had obviously missed the bros before hos memo. Funny, because he was a reformed player himself. His new woman had such a tight grip on his ball sack he was starting to sound like Mariah Carey and her obnoxious screeching every time he spoke.

“I’m beat. I’ll see you Sunday.” There was no need to elaborate. Riley knew I was a man of few words.

She turned to leave, grabbing her ridiculously large bag from my sofa.

“I really am sorry about Fiona. I didn’t mean to make it your problem.”

As she heaved the bag over her shoulder, I had to wonder how her posture remained so perfect, toting around baggage like that. How many tampons did a girl have to carry along with her anyway?

“It’s okay. It wasn’t entirely your fault. But I’m not bringing the good ones around you anymore.”

I picked up the pillow she’d flung at me and tossed it back at her, whacking her in the back of her head. “Oh, good! Bring the bad ones my way. They’re always more fun!”

“Goodbye, Marcus!” She sang as she left my apartment.

I laughed as I heard the door slam shut behind her. I’d kill any guy who treated her the way I treated women. She deserved so much better than a prick like me. She was just like Mom: caring, compassionate, warm, selfless. She took over Mom’s role even in her own grief, making sure Dad and I were looked after, fed, clean, happy. She was going to be a great mother herself one day—she just needed to find the right guy. He was out there somewhere and I almost wish I could find him for her, but hanging out in the places I did, with the people I did. . .the guy for her didn’t lurk amongst my lifestyle. Guys deserving of her were nothing like me.

Synopsis

Moving to Miami was supposed to be enough distance from her family and her past, but Paige Kerimov can’t seem to get them out of her head. A year of self-induced solitude, nothing but school, Paige reluctantly starts to let people back into her life, including one person in particular; the insistent and attractive Brady Quinlan with whom she is paired for a project that will impact her major. She has no choice but to work with him, no matter how tough that makes it to deny her attraction to him.

As Paige lets her guard down, remnants of a violent past and a tragic history start to resurface and Brady knows she is hiding something. He tries to figure her out, but she can’t let him see when the truth is that she isn’t sure if she’s in danger from anything other than herself

Excerpt

A single tear drop defies me and leaks out of my right eye, traveling a jagged path down my cheek. Brady takes his hand off of mine and wipes the tear away with one finger, then cups the side of my face and pulls me a little bit closer to him. “Don’t be sad, Paige. I’ve grieved already. I will always miss her, but I have wonderful memories of my mother to take with me.”

I close my eyes and lean into his hand without thinking. I’m sad for him, yes, but I also want to know why he can speak of his dead mother with such maturity when I can’t stop conjuring the image of my dead sister. And I’m a selfish bitch for being jealous of his acceptance.

When I open my eyes again, he is looking at me with intent. His thumb moves to stroke my bottom lip and a tiny sigh escapes my throat. The table between us is quite narrow and there is so little distance keeping me from kissing him. It scares me. I feel like a bucket of ice water is being poured over my head and I snap back in my seat with such suddenness that I knock my bag over and the contents spill out on the floor under the table. Brady is still poised there with his hand extended, but the look on his face says he is disappointed. He recovers in record time and we both bend down to retrieve my things. I shove my clothing back in the bag and then I sit up too fast and smack the back of my head on the hard surface of the table. It stuns me and makes my vision swim for a minute, but I still see what is laying on the floor. The package I received earlier must not have been sealed properly because the contents have made their way onto the floor. The necklace my sister always wore, a platinum heart pendant with her Garnet birthstone in the center, is sticking out of the envelope. It is dirty; covered in a substance that I believe is dried blood, and a note is attached. The red lipstick from the mirror was used to spell out ‘I will always find you’.

Sometimes doing the wrong thing feels so right…

I’m a player. I’m an asshole. I’m someone you should stay away from.

I have demons.
I’ve made mistakes.
And the biggest can’t be taken back.

I’ve gone to hell and back in twenty-nine years and I’m only now coming to terms with moving forward, righting my wrongs, and making amends. Except not everyone deserves forgiveness. Sometimes the damage done is beyond repair.
Everyday is exactly the same. I focus on the pain, in the quest to feel and forget, but I remember everything. When I close my eyes the darkness encroaches and some days it feels like the things that kill me are the things that make me feel alive.

I hovered over her sweet body, the soft flesh beneath my fingers like fucking silk. Her hands laced in the rungs of the headboard above her head, propping her breasts high and full for me. Her head was thrown back in ecstasy, full lips formed in a a perfect O as moans escaped her throat.

She was fucking stunning. I moved in and out of her, slowing my pace, hitting her as deep as I could, rounding my hips with each slow thrust and drag. She was everything, had been my everything for a few months, the only one that had ever gotten me.

All of me.

The me that no one else had ever seen.

Fuck of it was, she was my brother’s fiancée.

I’d fucking taken her right from under him.

I hadn’t meant to, I don’t think she’d meant to either, it’d just happened one night, and there’d been no going back.

And now here we were, months later, I was still plowing into her—taking her, owning her, making her mine—every fucking night in my bed, hearing her call my name, her eyes hazy with lust and love when I finished.

Except tonight was different.

Tonight was the last time.

Tonight I was ending it.

My heart clutched in my chest as the words floated through my head. My eyes burned with the pain of it.

I didn’t want to let her go, but more than anything, I was sick of running. And seeing my brother again had finally opened my eyes.

This was it.

This was it for us. For me and her. For the girl that had wrapped her fingers around my soul and held it so fucking tightly it was as if my every fucking breath depended on her.

A part of me still wishes I could let him command my body and take me in ways I’ve never imagined, though.

Arms in the air, hips swaying, I lost myself in the sounds of 112’s, “Peaches and Cream.” Matt moved up behind me, pulling me back against his hard chest, grinding his hips into mine. His hands glided teasingly down my arms and sides, causing a slow burn in my belly. His hand moved my hair over my shoulder so his lips could skim along the side of my neck, sending shivers down my spine.

Feeling like I was being watched, my eyes opened and looked directly into the blazing, heated gaze of Grant Morgan. I had made myself forget that he was here, but apparently he hadn’t forgotten I was. He sat forward in his booth, his one arm propped on his leg – watching me. He was the master of his domain and of his body. You could tell he was at ease with himself and knew how to command his body. He had a powerful aura now that I was closer to him. And if I wasn’t mistaken, his jaw seemed to tick when Matt ran his hands intimately down my thighs as he danced behind me.

From that moment forward, I danced for Grant. It was beyond my control. My imagination went wild with thoughts of him behind me, moving me sensually against him. Matt or not, I only wanted him to watch me. Only wanted him to touch me. Only wanted him to want me. It was dangerous. It was reckless. It was everything I wasn’t.

Grant watched me the whole time. Even when waitresses brought him what looked like whiskey or scotch. Even when Nik came back to talk with him. It was a rare occasion for me to look his way and not see his eyes on me. The heated look in them made my skin tingle and my panties grow wet with desire. I might as well have been naked, for the way his eyes stripped me bare.

At one point, I caught him subtly adjusting himself. When he did that, I closed my eyes, overcome with a wave of need. I ran my hands over my breasts and down my torso, further stimulating myself. I could imagine my hands down his pants, feeling his hardness beneath my palm as I squeezed it and made him hiss with pleasure. And when my hands skirted farther down my body, I imagined it was his, seeking to give me the same pleasure that I was giving him.

And that was how I spent the rest of the night. Seductively beckoning Grant to join me. Secretly wishing he would answer my unspoken call. When a man I didn’t know came up and pulled him away, I watched him leave the club and felt an odd sense of loss blanket me. What was happening to me?

Book Review: This Man Trilogy by Jodi Ellen Malpas

thismantrilogy2

4 Stars

thisman SYNOPSIS:

This Man (This Man #1)

Young interior designer Ava O’Shea has an appointment for a first consultation at The Manor with the owner, Mr Jesse Ward. She is expecting nothing more than an overweight, cravat wearing, well-to-do countryman, and on arrival, nothing would suggest otherwise. How wrong could she be? This Man is devastatingly handsome, charming and confident. He is also a conceited, hedonistic playboy, who knows no boundaries. Ava desperately does not want to be attracted to him, but she can’t control the overwhelming affect he has on her. Every instinct is telling her to run, so she does, but Jesse Ward is not so willing to let her go. He wants her and is determined to have her. She knows she is heading for heartbreak, but how can she run when he won’t let her?

MY REVIEW: 3….2….1….zero!!

So with all of the year-end polls I just had to figure out who Jesse Ward was. Not to mention one of my favorite authors said that she got her inspiration to write her book after reading this series. In an attempt to enlighten my curiosity, I just had to read this series, and can I say it did not disappoint.

Ava O’Shea goes on what she believes to be a first consultation with the owner of The Manor, and her initial instincts lead her to believe that said Jesse Ward was going to be anything but the man she found herself in the meeting. The sparks were flying all over the place so much to the point where one needs a restroom break just to attempt to gather themselves. (fanning myself) Poor Ava, she didn’t have a chance, but who would with a hottie like Mr. Ward. However, there is one problem, Ava is not looking for a new relationship, especially one with a client, she has just found her independence and working through her past. Jesse on the other hand has no intention on letting Ava get away that easy and the things he does will have you both angry as hell and perhaps a little moist (yup I said it lol). The chemistry is off the charts between the two, but as must as Ava wants to run away, she finds herself in some interesting situations with Mr. Ward. I can’t say that I’m not jealous.

Jesse had it all under control and he was quite accomplished, but what he didn’t know was that his meeting with Ava O’Shea was going to change so much, including the fact that he was now chasing a women, when the norm is that they threw themselves at him. The more Ava ran the more he wanted her, and his actions were at some point outrageous. There were times I was reading and was like WTF!!!!????? Did he really do that? Jesse always seemed to make the situation turn out in his favor, but what Dominant male doesn’t. Yes, I admit some of it is swoon worthy, even to the point where you are perhaps crossing your legs. :-) But there are points that make you want to cry and genuinely hurt for the characters.

The plot of the story draws you in and yes you will be hooked from the first page. The various degrees, and relationship stages will have you on this wild roller coaster that you won’t want to get off….or perhaps you will. I especially loved the innocence of Ava in this novel, though she knew so much, at some things she was very naive and that really helped to develop the novel.

This is definitely a must read. Add it to your TBR list if you haven’t already done so. It’s an intensive, possessive, steamy, addictive read.

beneaththisman SYNOPSIS:

Beneath This Man (Book #2 of the erotic This Man trilogy)

Jesse Ward drowned her with his intensity and blindsided her with his passion, but he kept her away from his dark secrets and broken soul. Leaving him was the only way Ava O’Shea could survive. She should have known that Jesse Ward is impossible to escape–and now he’s back in her life, determined to remind her of the sensual pleasures they had shared. Ava is equally determined to get at the truth beneath this man’s steely exterior. That means letting herself get close to the Lord of the Manor once more. And it’s exactly where Jesse wants her–within touching distance…

MY REVIEW: The Lord of the Manor is back, but so is his leading lady.  I was a little sad at the end of the first novel, but am very happy that Ava has begun to grab some courage and face some of their problems. Jesse has sent her through some challenging scenarios but here we also get to see a few vulnerabilities that peek out through his overbearing, controlling, sometime radical behavior. Ava as well have grown in this novel and is no longer as naive as she started out being. I was shocked at how the author revealed so many disturbing things from the past and how it was affecting their relationship. I could totally feel Ava’s emotions and actions and hell some of it I was all for, others had my jaw drop to the floor with a statement of “this chick has lost her marbles” (but hell if you went through a relationship with the Lord of the Manor you probably would too). Can you tell I was really into this story???

The sex of course is insanely hot. What’s fun about this book is that you see the immaturity of both Ava and Jesse and it’s really believable. There is one lady in this story that is a little sad, and I wanted to pull her hair and throw her down the stairs…….Sarah. Yes, she is one bitchy hell cat and will go to no lengths to deter the relationship between Jesse and Ava. Now this is where it got a little disturbing to for me. You will feel like you’ve been through a train wreck when you’re done reading but wait…..the story isn’t over. If you liked book 1, you will definitely like the second installment of the dysfunctional love story that is Ava and Jesse. I do recommend this to be added to your TBR list.

thismanconfessed SYNOPSIS:

This Man Confessed

THE STUNNING CONCLUSION TO THE THIS MAN TRILOGY!

The Manor, the very place where their passionate love affair began, fills with guests on what should be the happiest day of Ava and Jesse’s lives. She has accepted that she’ll never tame the fierceness in Jesse-and she doesn’t want to. Their love is profound, their connection powerful, but just when she thinks that she’s finally gotten beneath his guarded exterior, more questions arise, leading Ava to believe that Jesse Ward may not be the man she thinks he is. He knows too well how to take her to a place beyond ecstasy . . . but will he also drive her to the brink of despair? It’s time for this man to confess.

 MY REVIEW:

Just when I thought I had my head wrapped around the Lord of the Manor, damn did I get a wake up call. This is not your typical D/s relationship. These two characters can push each others buttons to the point of INSANITY!!!  Just like the first two books, this one also has a lot of sex, punishment fucks, fucking sense into her, and sleepy sex. I can’t seem to figure out if I love Jesse or hate him, I know there is a lot about him that disturbs me about him. Jesse has a lot of baggage and I had no idea how deep the rabbit hole went for him.

Though their relationship does take a natural progression, the relationship between Ava and Jesse is still really new as in they haven’t been together long, but with all they’ve been through you wouldn’t think so. Just when Ava thought she had finally broken the exterior of Jesse, he has more to expose. There are so many disturbing scenes in this book, at points it was hard to read, but I could not put this book down. If you want extreme drama, all you have to do is read this book. There are many WTF moments for both characters and even the sub characters. The author does eventually answer all of your questions in this book so you will not be left hanging. The book was the ultimate roller coaster ride of the series but you will be hooked. What I loved the most was the epilogue……it was the perfect ending with a look into their future, even though I want more. Perhaps I will be able to read more of Jesse and Ava if the author decides to give us a story on the other characters. A girl can hope,  can’t she?

I truly enjoyed this series. I started the first book and could not stop until the last page of the third book.

Prologue

“What the fuck does the bastard want now?” I huff out, glaring down at the name displayed on my cell phone. If I never have to speak to him again, it’ll be too soon. Jerking my right hand off the steering wheel, I reach over, turning the volume down on the stereo that’s blasting Avenged Sevenfold’s Nightmare” through the speakers.

My Father.

The person I hate most in the world. If God existed, the motherfucker’s life would have ended by now. But that hasn’t happened, and I don’t see it happening any time soon. I’m the type of guy that prays for his dad to get a brain-fucking hemorrhage that will take him straight to Hell, where he belongs.

“Yeah?” I greet the fuck as I turn into the underground parking garage at Lockhart Publishing in my silver Audi R8.

Way to ruin my day, Dad!

“Nicholas, is that any way to answer your phone? You’re the CEO of a company for Christ’s sake. The least you could do is act like a professional.” Two companies to be exact, but what the Hell does being a CEO have to do with professionalism when the person on the other end of the line is the sorry excuse I get to call father? The man should know by now, I’m going to do and act any damn way I want. I’ve never been the “do as you’re told” type, so why start now?

“I wasn’t aware this was a professional call.” My tone is sarcastic, but I don’t give a shit. The dick-fuck knows I hate him. Nothing is ever going to change that. We will never drink a beer together. We will never have a strong father/son bond. Hell, the only bond we do have is blood. The simple fact that his blood runs through my veins and that it will forever link us disturbs me.

“Son, let’s not argue today. I called for a specific reason, so I won’t keep you any longer than necessary.” I can tell by his clipped tone he doesn’t want to be on the phone with me any more than I do with him.

“Fine, then please tell me what you want so I can get back to work.” I breathe out in annoyance.

My father was a well-known Defense Attorney in LA when I was growing up. He made a living getting criminals out of jail for many years and now he’s a prominent judge. There is some real fucked-up irony in that. The man should be locked up for the shit he has done to my mother over the years. Why the woman stays married to him is beyond me. It’s not like she needs his money. In fact, my father has benefited from her inheritance more than she has.

Rotten bastard.

“As you know, Thursday is Thanksgiving, and your mother would like you and your sister present for lunch.” He knows I’ll do anything for my mom. I think I proved that to him a long time ago. “Do you think you can do this for her?” he adds. He knows I’m going to say yes.

“What time?” I ask on a sigh as I open my car door, stepping out into the dark, musky air under my building. To my annoyance, I slam the door harder than I intend. Fuck! Why do I let this man get under my skin so easily? Just the sound of his voice tends to set me off.

“Noon,” he responds. A few hours in the company of my father is sure to piss me right the fuck off along with adding additional renovations to my house for my handyman to fix. Not that I can’t fix the damage I create myself, but why go through all that trouble when I can hire someone to do it for me? I’m sure the guy already thinks I’m a raging alcoholic who comes home and punches holes in walls for fun. I’m not, of course, or at least I’m not yet. If he knew all the damage was the result of my frustration with my father, he would understand.

Yeah, so I have anger issues.

“Okay, but if you want Nikki there, then perhaps you should call your daughter yourself.” I make my way to the elevator pressing the “up” button. As I wait, I check the time on my Rolex. It’s 1:14pm. I have plenty of time before my meeting with Teresa. Why I ever made that woman Vice President of my company, I’m still not sure. She’s great at business and a brilliant editor, but damn, I wish she would stop trying to get into my pants every time we are alone. Now that she’s my VP, I see her more often than I like. It’s not like she isn’t attractive, because she is, with blonde hair, big tits, and a tiny waist, but I don’t sleep with people who work for me. And well…she annoys the fuck out of me, plus she is too bitchy. It’s a big fucking turn off!

The sound of my father’s voice brings me back to our conversation. I really need to wrap this up. The longer I speak to him, the longer I’ll be at Knocked Out tonight, kicking the shit out of my best friend’s ass.

Jase is one of the few people who knows about my relationship with my father and why I hate the man. He and I share a common hatred for our fathers. Everyone that works for my father thinks he’s an outstanding judge and wonderful family man.

What a crock of shit!

“Nicolette is being her usual immature and childish self. It would be easier for all of us if you ask her to come. She listens to you, Nicholas.” He sounds annoyed with his last statement and I silently laugh. My sister isn’t immature or childish. She would just rather ignore his calls than deal with the man. She hates the heartless bastard as much as I do.

Any man, who lays a hand on a woman with the sole intension of hurting her isn’t much of a man at all in my book. That’s the kind of fucked-up shit my father loves to do to women. We watched him physically and mentally abuse our mother for years. The day I turned twenty-one, I made sure my father never laid a hand on my mother again. That’s not to say he’s stopped hurting women because he hasn’t. Now, he has a mistress to abuse. He doesn’t know I know about her, but I do. Surely my mother has to know too.

As the elevator door opens, Matt, my senior editor and good friend, is exiting. I pin him with my signature icy stare. I can tell by the look that crosses his face he knows I’m in one of my moods, so he wisely says nothing and passes me quickly. These moods only happen when I have to communicate with the man on the other end of my phone.

“Nicholas,” he stresses, “just call your sister for me. I don’t have time for Nicolette right now. I’m walking into court as we speak.” He has never had time for Nikki or me for that matter. Not that I care. I stopped caring about my father before I learned to write my own God damn name.

“Sure, Dad!” I force out through clenched teeth. “I’ll handle it. We’ll be there on Thursday at noon. Is there anything else? I have a meeting to get to.” I’m not totally lying. I do have a meeting to attend, but it’s not for another hour.

“No, there isn’t. I’ll see you then.” He ends the call, not bothering to say goodbye. This is nothing unusual. He thinks everyone around him is there is serve him.

I enter the elevator and I press number eleven. As I ride up, I send Nikki a quick text letting her know the plans for Thanksgiving. This is sure to brighten her day as much as it has mine. My sister is the female version of myself. But perhaps Nikki controls her anger a little more than I do.

As I move my hand to store my phone in the breast pocket of my jacket, I hear the alert telling me I have a text message. I look down; it’s my sister’s reply.

FUCK!

The corners of my mouth turn up as I shove the phone back inside my jacket just as the elevator reaches my destination. My smile fades; I’m not looking forward to the rest of my day. Dealing with Teresa is one thing, but after dealing with Judge James ‘Asshole’ Lewis, I’m sure I’ll take out my anger on her at some point today.

As I exit the elevator, something, or rather someone, catches my eye. She is standing at my receptionist, Rachel’s desk, with her back facing me. The legs catch my attention first. They are toned and her skin is fair. Her body turns a fraction as my eyes travel up, seeing a side profile. She is slender, but not at all skinny. My eyes continue its path up her body.

Fuck me, Sunday!

My eyes land on her hair. It’s a stunning shade of red. Darker than strawberry-blonde, but lighter than auburn. It’s shiny and bright; unique and exotic like a rare pet. Damn, did I just compare a woman to a pet? That’s a new one even for you, Lockhart.

I can’t see the color of her eyes from where I’m standing, but that mouth…those pink fucking lips are made for sucking cock. I allow my eyes to drop. She’s wearing a navy dress and it’s a little on the short side to be considered business attire, but it looks good on her body.

Fuck!

Get a hold of yourself, Lockhart. You’re at work, man.

My eyes glide back up her body, back up to those fucking beautiful drapes that fall down her back. She looks like an angel…an angel I’d like to tie down and fuck.

But God damn, that hair is making my dick hard!
