Hard Pass (Lone Star Rebels Book 2) by K. Bromberg
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 Stars
Spoiler Level: Minimal because I’m not that kind of reviewer.
Heat Level: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Umm… somebody turn on a damn fan.
Alright, Kristy Bromberg.
You got me.
I went into Hard Pass expecting a good sports romance. Give me football, some sexual tension, a complicated man, a woman who isn’t about to make his life easy, and enough drama to keep me turning pages, and I’m usually a happy reader.
But this book said, “Oh, you thought we were just here for football players and sex? Girl, sit down.”
And I did.
Because Cole and Dublin had some SHIT to work through.
🏈 COLE + DUBLIN = Y’ALL AREN’T FOOLING ANYBODY
Let’s start with the obvious.
The chemistry between Cole and Dublin was chemistry-ing from the damn beginning.
You know when two characters are trying to behave like mature, rational adults while you, the reader, are sitting there like:
“Oh, please. Y’all want each other. Stop playing in my face.”
That was me.
Even after years, the fire between these two was very much alive, well, hydrated, moisturized, and minding everybody’s business. 😂
Their first meeting didn’t exactly go the way either of them expected, but that made their story even better because sometimes you can try like hell to become someone different, convince yourself you’ve changed, bury parts of yourself, and move on with life…
…but some habits die HARD when you’re pretending to be someone you’re not.
And Cole and Dublin definitely had some unfinished business.
🧠 BUT WAIT… WE HAVE ACTUAL EMOTIONAL DEPTH?!
One of my favorite things about this book was the psychology woven throughout the story.
There’s trauma here.
There are behaviors and reactions that don’t magically disappear because somebody fine walks into your life and gives you great sex.
THANK YOU.
Romance does not magically cure trauma.
A six-pack and a good stroke are NOT substitutes for therapy, people. 😂
What I appreciated was the acknowledgment that sometimes you genuinely don’t understand why you respond to situations the way you do. You may not even recognize that something from your past is still controlling how you move through your present.
And sometimes you need help figuring that shit out.
That. Is. Okay.
Seeking help doesn’t make someone weak. Wanting to understand yourself better doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. Sometimes growth begins when you finally admit, I don’t know why I do this, but I want to understand.
I loved seeing that explored within Dublin’s journey because it gave this story emotional weight beyond the romance.
🕵🏽♀️ AND THEN KRISTY ACTIVATED MY INSPECTOR GADGET BRAIN
Now…
Ms. Bromberg decided she was going to sneak a little mystery/scavenger-hunt situation into my football romance.
Okay.
BET.
🎶 Dun dun dun dun dun… Inspector Gadget… 🎶
Listen, I read too many suspense novels for my own damn good.
I notice shit.
Somebody coughs suspiciously on page 32 and I’m like:
“Hmmm. Why did he cough? Where was he Tuesday? Check his bank records.”
😂😂😂
So YES, I figured out who the culprit was before the official reveal.
Kuddos to my Inspector Gadget mind.
But I actually enjoyed figuring it out. The clues were there without the story beating me over the head with them, and once everything finally came together, knowing who I suspected didn’t make the emotional fallout hurt any less.
Because DAMN.
That revelation hurt.
What followed was probably one of the parts that hit me hardest because it demonstrated how quickly relationships can fall apart when trust gets destroyed and how easily someone’s vulnerabilities can be used against them.
There’s betrayal…
And then there’s BETRAYAL.
I’m leaving that right there because we said minimal spoilers, and y’all are not about to blame me for ruining your reading experience. 😂
🏈 COLE, SIR… GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE
Now we need to discuss Cole.
Because…
COLE.
Sir.
I loved that man’s persistence.
Dublin basically built an emotional NFL defensive line around herself and told that man:
NO ENTRY.
Cole looked at the defense, checked the coverage, changed the play at the line and said:
“Bet.”
😂😂😂
What made me love him wasn’t simply that he kept pursuing her.
It was how he showed up for her.
There were things Cole did to support Dublin that she didn’t even know about.
No applause needed.
No announcement.
No “Look at everything I did for you.”
He simply did it.
That shit gets me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Because grand romantic gestures are wonderful, but quietly supporting somebody when there is absolutely nothing in it for you?
Sir, you may proceed directly into Book Boyfriend consideration.
Do not pass Go.
Do not collect $200.
👀 NOW ABOUT THAT SUITE…
Ahem.
Kristy.
Ma’am.
What exactly were we doing in that suite?
Because apparently I suddenly have an appreciation for luxury stadium accommodations.
For research purposes, obviously.
👀
The steam was STEAMING.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I was sitting there fanning myself like somebody’s auntie at Sunday service.
“Lawd… Jesus… well, okay then.”
Cole and Dublin weren’t lacking chemistry before, but when these two finally decided to stop pretending?
Baby.
FLAG ON THE PLAY.
Excessive heat.
Fifteen-yard penalty.
Somebody check the damn replay because I might need to reread that section to make sure I properly understood the play formation.
For literary analysis.
Obviously.
Moving along. 😂
🏈 THE SPORTS ROMANCE ACTUALLY HAD SPORTS!
Another thing I appreciated?
The football elements weren’t just decorative.
Sometimes I pick up a “sports romance” and I’m halfway through the damn book wondering:
Does this man actually PLAY the sport?!
Not here.
Football was incorporated into the story and characters without becoming overwhelming. It complemented the romance instead of competing with it.
The overall plot was also easy to follow. I liked the pacing, enjoyed the characters, and the combination of romance, sports, mystery, trauma, healing, betrayal, and steam kept me engaged.
❤️ AND THAT’S REALLY WHY THIS WORKED FOR ME
Underneath all the football, sexual tension, mystery, and spicy suite shenanigans, Hard Pass is really about people trying to understand how their past shaped the people they became.
And then deciding whether they’re willing to do something about it.
Dublin pushes.
Cole pursues.
Both have baggage.
Both have things they need to understand.
And somewhere between all that emotional chaos, they have to figure out whether what they feel is worth risking the safety of everything they’ve built around themselves.
That’s the part that made their relationship work for me.
Cole wasn’t simply trying to get Dublin.
He supported her.
He challenged her.
And sometimes he loved her in ways she wasn’t even aware of yet.
SWOON.
⭐ FINAL VERDICT: 4 STARS
Kristy Bromberg continues to write stories that give me more than romance, and Hard Pass was no exception.
Did I figure out the mystery early?
Yep.
Inspector V remains undefeated. 🕵🏽♀️😂
Did that stop me from enjoying watching everything unravel?
HELL NO.
Did Cole have me swooning?
Absolutely.
Did Dublin occasionally make me want to reach through my Kindle and tell her, “GIRL, if you don’t stop running from that man…”
Also yes.
Did the suite scene have me questioning whether I needed to investigate NFL luxury-suite pricing?
😂🔥🏈
Overall, Hard Pass gave me romance, football, emotional depth, trauma and healing, mystery, betrayal, chemistry, characters I actually cared about, and enough spice to remind me that apparently stadium suites have uses beyond watching the game.
Solid 4 stars from me. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you love sports romance with emotional depth, second-chance energy, mystery, complicated characters, a hero who SHOWS UP, and chemistry hot enough to get somebody fined by the league…
ADD. THIS. SHIT. TO. YOUR. TBR.
You can thank me after the suite.
Happy Reading!
