Today is September 20, 2026.
I have read (completed) 42 books toward my goal of 100 for 2026.Β The first half of September found me plagued with illness to the point that I didn’t even have the energy to read…..How Dare my immune system stop my desire to read!!! Needless to say, I didn’t get through all my desired books this month, thus putting me off track of my goal. But hey who’s counting?! Well me apparently!! DUH!! I’m still 1-Click adding to my “TBR List”Β adding more and more books through it as well as signing up for ARC reads. Not that I care.
I’ve been reading novel, after novel, after novelβ¦..lol. However, here is what is occupying my spare time this week:
I’ve also found myself back on these damn reading apps (when I’m in between errands), so here’s what I’m currently reading on them:
Death By Breathing by Arianniah RainΒ
Inferno Demon Riders MC: My Five Obsessed Bullies by KJ
The MC President’s Forsaken Wife by Gennifer Reid
Luna Rising by KH Holder

Hard Pass (Lone Star Rebels Book 2) by K. Bromberg
Rating: ββββ 4.5 Stars
Spoiler Level: Minimal because Iβm not that kind of reviewer.
Heat Level: π₯π₯π₯π₯ Ummβ¦ somebody turn on a damn fan.
Alright, Kristy Bromberg.
You got me.
I went into Hard Pass expecting a good sports romance. Give me football, some sexual tension, a complicated man, a woman who isnβt about to make his life easy, and enough drama to keep me turning pages, and Iβm usually a happy reader.
But this book said, βOh, you thought we were just here for football players and sex? Girl, sit down.β
And I did.
Because Cole and Dublin had some SHIT to work through.
Letβs start with the obvious.
The chemistry between Cole and Dublin was chemistry-ing from the damn beginning.
You know when two characters are trying to behave like mature, rational adults while you, the reader, are sitting there like:
βOh, please. Yβall want each other. Stop playing in my face.β
That was me.
Even after years, the fire between these two was very much alive, well, hydrated, moisturized, and minding everybodyβs business. π
Their first meeting didnβt exactly go the way either of them expected, but that made their story even better because sometimes you can try like hell to become someone different, convince yourself youβve changed, bury parts of yourself, and move on with lifeβ¦
β¦but some habits die HARD when youβre pretending to be someone youβre not.
And Cole and Dublin definitely had some unfinished business.
One of my favorite things about this book was the psychology woven throughout the story.
Thereβs trauma here.
There are behaviors and reactions that donβt magically disappear because somebody fine walks into your life and gives you great sex.
THANK YOU.
Romance does not magically cure trauma.
A six-pack and a good stroke are NOT substitutes for therapy, people. π
What I appreciated was the acknowledgment that sometimes you genuinely donβt understand why you respond to situations the way you do. You may not even recognize that something from your past is still controlling how you move through your present.
And sometimes you need help figuring that shit out.
That. Is. Okay.
Seeking help doesnβt make someone weak. Wanting to understand yourself better doesnβt mean thereβs something wrong with you. Sometimes growth begins when you finally admit, I donβt know why I do this, but I want to understand.
I loved seeing that explored within Dublinβs journey because it gave this story emotional weight beyond the romance.
Nowβ¦
Ms. Bromberg decided she was going to sneak a little mystery/scavenger-hunt situation into my football romance.
Okay.
BET.
πΆ Dun dun dun dun dunβ¦ Inspector Gadgetβ¦ πΆ
Listen, I read too many suspense novels for my own damn good.
I notice shit.
Somebody coughs suspiciously on page 32 and Iβm like:
βHmmm. Why did he cough? Where was he Tuesday? Check his bank records.β
πππ
So YES, I figured out who the culprit was before the official reveal.
Kuddos to my Inspector Gadget mind.
But I actually enjoyed figuring it out. The clues were there without the story beating me over the head with them, and once everything finally came together, knowing who I suspected didnβt make the emotional fallout hurt any less.
Because DAMN.
That revelation hurt.
What followed was probably one of the parts that hit me hardest because it demonstrated how quickly relationships can fall apart when trust gets destroyed and how easily someone’s vulnerabilities can be used against them.
Thereβs betrayalβ¦
And then thereβs BETRAYAL.
Iβm leaving that right there because we said minimal spoilers, and yβall are not about to blame me for ruining your reading experience. π
Now we need to discuss Cole.
Becauseβ¦
COLE.
Sir.
I loved that manβs persistence.
Dublin basically built an emotional NFL defensive line around herself and told that man:
NO ENTRY.
Cole looked at the defense, checked the coverage, changed the play at the line and said:
βBet.β
πππ
What made me love him wasnβt simply that he kept pursuing her.
It was how he showed up for her.
There were things Cole did to support Dublin that she didnβt even know about.
No applause needed.
No announcement.
No βLook at everything I did for you.β
He simply did it.
That shit gets me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Because grand romantic gestures are wonderful, but quietly supporting somebody when there is absolutely nothing in it for you?
Sir, you may proceed directly into Book Boyfriend consideration.
Do not pass Go.
Do not collect $200.
Ahem.
Kristy.
Maβam.
What exactly were we doing in that suite?
Because apparently I suddenly have an appreciation for luxury stadium accommodations.
For research purposes, obviously.
π
The steam was STEAMING.
π₯π₯π₯π₯
I was sitting there fanning myself like somebodyβs auntie at Sunday service.
βLawdβ¦ Jesusβ¦ well, okay then.β
Cole and Dublin werenβt lacking chemistry before, but when these two finally decided to stop pretending?
Baby.
FLAG ON THE PLAY.
Excessive heat.
Fifteen-yard penalty.
Somebody check the damn replay because I might need to reread that section to make sure I properly understood the play formation.
For literary analysis.
Obviously.
Moving along. π
Another thing I appreciated?
The football elements werenβt just decorative.
Sometimes I pick up a βsports romanceβ and Iβm halfway through the damn book wondering:
Does this man actually PLAY the sport?!
Not here.
Football was incorporated into the story and characters without becoming overwhelming. It complemented the romance instead of competing with it.
The overall plot was also easy to follow. I liked the pacing, enjoyed the characters, and the combination of romance, sports, mystery, trauma, healing, betrayal, and steam kept me engaged.
Underneath all the football, sexual tension, mystery, and spicy suite shenanigans, Hard Pass is really about people trying to understand how their past shaped the people they became.
And then deciding whether they’re willing to do something about it.
Dublin pushes.
Cole pursues.
Both have baggage.
Both have things they need to understand.
And somewhere between all that emotional chaos, they have to figure out whether what they feel is worth risking the safety of everything they’ve built around themselves.
Thatβs the part that made their relationship work for me.
Cole wasnβt simply trying to get Dublin.
He supported her.
He challenged her.
And sometimes he loved her in ways she wasn’t even aware of yet.
SWOON.
Kristy Bromberg continues to write stories that give me more than romance, and Hard Pass was no exception.
Did I figure out the mystery early?
Yep.
Inspector V remains undefeated. π΅π½ββοΈπ
Did that stop me from enjoying watching everything unravel?
HELL NO.
Did Cole have me swooning?
Absolutely.
Did Dublin occasionally make me want to reach through my Kindle and tell her, βGIRL, if you don’t stop running from that manβ¦β
Also yes.
Did the suite scene have me questioning whether I needed to investigate NFL luxury-suite pricing?
ππ₯π
Overall, Hard Pass gave me romance, football, emotional depth, trauma and healing, mystery, betrayal, chemistry, characters I actually cared about, and enough spice to remind me that apparently stadium suites have uses beyond watching the game.
Solid 4.5 stars from me. ββββ
If you love sports romance with emotional depth, second-chance energy, mystery, complicated characters, a hero who SHOWS UP, and chemistry hot enough to get somebody fined by the leagueβ¦
You can thank me after the suite.
Happy Reading!

Threads of Silver: The Silver Storm Series Book One by Nora Vale
ββββ 4 Stars
Okay, THIS is why I keep coming back to shifter romances. Give me complicated pack politics, a strong Luna finding her voice, alpha males with completely different personalities, family loyalty, rebellion, a little danger, and enough steam to make me say, βWell… go ahead then!β π
I really enjoyed this read!
One of my favorite parts of the story was Lyraβs growth. She has every reason to fall into a victim mentality after everything happening around her, but instead, we get to watch her begin taking back her power. She starts recognizing that she has choices, that her voice matters, and that she doesnβt have to simply accept the life other people have decided she should have. THAT is the kind of character development I love. I don’t need my heroines to start off fearless. Give me a woman who discovers her strength along the way.
And then we have Lucan.
Sir. Rebellious Prince. I see you. π
I loved watching him stand firm in what he believes, even when doing so means challenging basically everything he was raised to believe and everything expected of him. There is something incredibly satisfying about a character realizing, βYeah… my family has been doing this forever, but perhaps my family is WRONG.β π Lucan isn’t rebellious just for the sake of being difficult. His choices actually mean something, and I loved how his journey toward choosing for himself mirrors Lyra’s journey toward doing the same.
And then…
COAL.
Coal, Coal, Coal.
What am I supposed to do with you already?! π
Because apparently one alpha wasn’t enough to keep my attention occupied. Here comes Coal with that whole bad-boy Alpha King who can still be a fair ruler energy, and unfortunately for me, that is exactly the type of fictional nonsense that gets me every single time.
What I really appreciate, though, is that Lucan and Coal don’t feel like carbon copies of each other. Their personalities, leadership styles, motivations, and relationships with Lyra are different. Yet somehow, the differences between all three characters create a balance that works. I am VERY interested in seeing how those dynamics develop because there is already enough tension brewing to keep me seated.
And yes, let’s discuss King Roderick for approximately five seconds.
That man is an ASSHAT. There. Discussion complete. π
Whatever consequences are headed his way, I will be sitting comfortably with my snacks waiting for delivery.
Another element I wasn’t expecting to enjoy quite as much as I did was the underlying storyline involving Lyra’s family. Their willingness to choose her, knowing there could be serious consequences if Roderick discovered their involvement, added another emotional layer to the story. Loyalty means something different when choosing someone could cost you everything.
Then those final chapters hit and suddenly I went from casually enjoying myself to:
YES, NORA!!!
I won’t spoil it, but the ending definitely turned up the energy and gave me that delicious βOhhhh, so THIS is where we’re going?!β feeling that makes you immediately start thinking about the next book.
And of course, we cannot forget the Alpha/Luna steaminess.
π₯π₯π₯
More, please.
Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable start to a shifter story that has plenty of room to grow. I loved the character dynamics, the themes of choice and empowerment, the family loyalty, the pack politics, and the fact that our main characters aren’t simply accepting the roles other people assigned them.
Lyra is finding her power.
Lucan is questioning tradition.
Coal already has me suspiciously interested.
Roderick can kick rocks.
And apparently I’m coming back for Book Two. π
If you’re a fan of shifter romance, Alpha/Luna dynamics, rebellious royals, complicated pack politics, family loyalty, strong female character growth, and some spicy paranormal romance, I’d definitely recommend adding this one to your TBR.
ββββ 4/5 stars
Now excuse me while I go find out exactly how much trouble these wolves are about to cause next. πΊπ₯
Progress, not perfection⦠yet.
There are certain decisions you make in life that sound absolutely brilliant when youβre sitting down, well-rested, hydrated, caffeinated, and clearly suffering from temporary delusions of grandeur.
Starting a homeschool journey with three of my four children was apparently one of those decisions.
Because, babyβ¦
HOMESCHOOLING IS NOT FOR THE WEAK.
And homeschooling three completely different children? With three different personalities? Three different learning styles?
And because I apparently enjoy making life extra spicy, THREE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS designed to better address each childβs individual needs?
Chile.
Preferably someone with teaching credentials, a bottle of wine, an industrial-sized coffee maker, and the ability to explain why somebody suddenly cannot remember something we literally discussed eleven minutes ago.
When I decided to homeschool three of my children, I had good reasons.
Every child learns differently. Every child has different strengths, challenges, interests, and needs. I wanted each of mine to have an educational experience that actually worked for them, rather than forcing all three into the same little academic box and hoping everybody survived.
Beautiful, right?
Inspirational even. Look at me being intentional. Look at me individualizing education. Look at me creating three separate educational plans.
Now look at me at 10:37 a.m. trying to remember which child is supposed to be logged into which program while somebody needs help with an assignment, somebody else suddenly needs a snack despite having just eaten, and another child is looking at me like I personally invented fractions.
Oh, and did I mention that while all of this is happening, I ALSO WORK A FULL-TIME PUBLIC SERVICE POSITION FROM HOME?!
Yes. A real job. With actual responsibilities. Deadlines. Meetings. Emails. Phone calls. People who reasonably expect me to be productive during the workday.
Because somewhere along the way, people started believing that βworking from homeβ means βavailable for everybody else’s random needs from 8 to 5.β
No, ma’am.
I am at work. My commute may be approximately twelve steps, but I AM STILL AT WORK.
So now I’m simultaneously trying to be a productive public service professional while overseeing three children’s education.
Basically, I’m sitting in a meeting looking professional from the shoulders up while silently communicating across the room:
WHY ARE YOU NOT LOGGED INTO MATH?!
This is a skill that absolutely belongs on my rΓ©sumΓ©.
WTF WAS I THINKING?!
Nobody tells you that homeschooling multiple children basically turns you into a teacher, principal, guidance counselor, IT department, cafeteria worker, attendance clerk, curriculum coordinator, transportation department, school nurse, and disgruntled employee.
Except…
YOU ARE ALSO MANAGEMENT.
And in my case, management has another full-time job. So who exactly am I supposed to complain to?
HR?
I AM HR.
This is some bullsh*t.
As if my new position as Superintendent of Lee Academy, full-time public servant, cheer coach, and general household crisis manager wasn’t enough, my body apparently decided it wanted attention too.
And when I say I got sick, I don’t mean the cute kind of sick where you sniffle dramatically, drink some tea, wrap yourself in a blanket, and binge-watch television.
No.
Those who know me know there are a couple of pretty reliable ways to determine whether I’m actually sick.
Can Valencia get out of bed?
And perhaps more importantly:
Can Valencia leave the house to get coffee?
If the answer to both questions is NO, somebody might want to check my pulse. Because coffee? Coffee and I have a relationship. Coffee has been there for me. Coffee understands me. Coffee doesn’t ask why the assignment isn’t submitted yet. So when I couldn’t even drag myself out of the house for coffee?
Houston, we had a problem.
I was so sick that I had to cancel a Laveen Divine Cheer practice during the month of a performance.
If you know Coach V, you know how much it takes for that to happen.
But THEN…
I couldn’t even READ.
Excuse me?! Now we’ve crossed a line.
Being sick is already disrespectful. But being so sick that an avid reader and book blogger doesn’t even feel like reading? That feels personal. I have books to read! ARCs are sitting there looking at me like:
“So…you just not gonna open me?”
Authors are somewhere wondering whether I’ve fallen off the face of the earth. My blog is probably collecting digital dust. My Goodreads goals are somewhere tapping their little imaginary watches. And I’m lying in bed thinking:
I KNOW. DAMMIT. I’M TRYING.
So to my authors, readers, fellow bloggers, and everybody waiting on reviews and new posts:
Please bear with me while I get my bearings back.
I am officially behind on my ARC reads and blog posts. Not because I abandoned my beloved books, but because apparently my immune system scheduled an unauthorized vacation. Management was not consulted.
Can we discuss this whole life-over-40 situation for a minute? Because who approved this?
I remember a time when I could stay up all night, get three hours of sleep, drink something caffeinated, and carry on with my day like a responsible member of society.
Now?
I sleep wrong and wake up with an injury. I cough too hard and suddenly I’m evaluating my entire healthcare plan. And when I get sick? My body apparently sends out an automatic email:
OFFICE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
Life over 40 ain’t for the weak.
But hey…
Who’s counting the f’s I have left to give?
Certainly not me. We’re operating on a limited supply around here, and I’m pretty sure homeschooling is using most of them.
For those who haven’t been following along, this Chicago girl now lives in Arizona.
Or as I lovingly refer to it:
HOTZONA.
And believe it or not, I actually love Arizona. The sunshine? Beautiful. The winters? Absolutely disrespectful to everybody back home shoveling snow, and I love that for us. The scenery? Gorgeous. But then Arizona says:
“You seem a little too comfortable. Would you like some dirt in your lungs?”
Enter dust storm and monsoon season.
Because nothing says desert living quite like watching a giant wall of dust roll through town like the apocalypse has an appointment at 6:30. All that settled dust, pollen, dirt, allergens, and whatever else has been minding its business on the ground suddenly gets launched into the atmosphere.
And my body is like:
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Arizona: Here’s some beautiful rain.
Also Arizona: And here’s everything that has been sitting on the ground since March. BREATHE DEEPLY.
Ma’am.
Now somehow, through sickness, homeschooling chaos, full-time work, cheer responsibilities, unread books, and my rapidly disappearing personal time, I did manage to make it out for AZ Black Rodeo weekend.
AND I HAD A BLAST.
Sometimes you need that reminder that life isn’t just deadlines, assignments, work meetings, practices, schedules, and responsibilities.
Sometimes you need to put on your boots, get outside, enjoy the culture, laugh, have fun, and temporarily pretend there aren’t three homeschool programs waiting for you when you get home.
Was I going back to educational chaos afterward?
Absolutely.
But for those few hours?
YEEHAW, BABY.
Mama was OUTSIDE.
Because apparently they still require an education.
Rude.
The biggest adjustment with homeschooling hasn’t necessarily been the academics. It’s realizing just how much of your day becomes centered around everyone else’s needs. I thought I was busy before. That’s adorable. Because now there is ALWAYS something.
Assignments.
Questions.
Schedules.
Progress checks.
Passwords.
Projects.
Lunch.
A full-time public service job.
Meetings.
Emails.
Deadlines.
Cheer.
Appointments.
Household responsibilities.
More questions. And why does everybody need to speak to me at the exact same time?! Meanwhile, I’m trying to maintain my own identity somewhere in there.
Reader.
Writer.
Blogger.
Coach.
Founder.
Public service professional.
Mom.
Woman.
Human being who would occasionally like to sit alone and stare at a wall without someone asking me where something is.
None.
Zero.
Personal time has left the building. Personal time changed its number. Personal time blocked me.
At this point, if I go to the bathroom alone, I’m considering it a wellness retreat.
Underneath all my complaining, colorful vocabulary, caffeine dependency, and occasional desire to hide in my car…
I still believe this can be worth it. I’m learning my children differently. I’m seeing where they thrive. I’m discovering where they struggle.
I’m learning when to push, when to adjust, and when everybody needs to close the laptops before somebody ends up on the evening news.
And they’re learning something about me too.
Mostly that Mama doesn’t know everything. But Mama will Google it. We’re figuring it out. Some days are productive and beautiful. Some days I feel like Superwoman. Other days, the biggest educational accomplishment is that everybody remained alive, fed, and nobody threw a Laptop.
Progress, not perfection⦠yet.
And maybe that’s what this season of life is really about. Not having everything perfectly organized. Not pretending homeschooling is magical every day. Not pretending motherhood after 40 is effortless.
And definitely not pretending I can work a full-time public service position from home and actually remain productive, run a cheer organization, homeschool three kids through three different programs, maintain a blog, read ARCs, write books, manage a household, have some resemblance of a personal life, and remain completely sane every second of the day.
Because apparently I looked at 24 hours in a day and said:
“Yeah…I can fit some more shit in there.”
Ma’am.
No, you cannot.
Sometimes I’m killing it. Sometimes I’m surviving it. Sometimes I’m answering work emails while checking an assignment, mentally planning cheer practice, staring at an unread ARC, reheating the same cup of coffee for the third time, and wondering:
I graduated already. Why the hell am I doing school again?!
π
Homeschool parents, COME TO THE FRONT OF THE CONGREGATION.
Especially my fellow work-from-home homeschool parents because I KNOW somebody out there understands this madness.
I need answers.
How are y’all doing this?!
How do you homeschool multiple children, work a full-time job, remain productive, and not completely lose yourself in the process?
Do you actually have personal time, or is that just homeschool propaganda?
How do you balance individual learning needs when every child is using a different program?
How do you handle work meetings when somebody suddenly forgets every rule they’ve ever been taught the second your camera turns on?
And most importantly:
HOW DO YOU KEEP EVERYBODY BUSY LONG ENOUGH TO DRINK AN ENTIRE CUP OF COFFEE WHILE IT’S STILL HOT?
Because that’s the level of educational research I’m interested in right now.
And to my fellow 40+ parents:
Please tell me I’m not alone. When did staying home alone with a book and nobody calling your name become the equivalent of an all-inclusive vacation?
So yes, I’m behind on my reading. I’m behind on blogging. I’ve been sick. I’m juggling three homeschool programs. I’m working full-time. I’m trying to actually be productive at said full-time job. Cheer season is cheer-seasoning. Arizona is throwing dirt into the atmosphere. And my personal time is currently listed as a missing person.
But I’m getting my bearings back.
The books aren’t going anywhere. The blog isn’t going anywhere. And neither am I.
Although…
if anybody knows a homeschool teacher who accepts payment in coffee, sarcasm, and eternal gratitude, SEND THEM MY WAY.
Until next time,
Mz. Trulee V
Mother. Public Servant. Coach. Author. Blogger. Homeschool Administrator Apparently.
Progress, not perfection⦠yet.
