Book Review: Breed of Envy (Book #2) by Lanie Jordan

MY REVIEW:
This book is the sequel of Breed of Innocence and it is as good as the first one or maybe even better! Breed of Envy picks up from where Breed of Innocence leaves off allowing Jade and Linc to face new challenges. From budding love to demon hunts to demon empathy — their lives are definitely not boring. The two embark upon demon hunts which results in some interesting experiences an revelations. There’s a lot of drama going on – much like high school, that is very relatable. The pressure on Jade is so oppressive that she considers leaving the Center.

I loved how the author let us have insight into the personal aspects of the characters and experience their lives more in-depth. The main character/ heroine Jade keeps her guard up and doesn’t get all weak and dependable on Linc with whom she shares a confusing romantic relationship. Jade is a heroine that anyone can relate to and in this sequel she discovers her true identity and heritage. Without the benefit of a parental structure, Jade struggles with the basic teenage issues such as identity, relationships, and trust. And yet, she is strong, both physically and emotionally and is not afraid to speak and stand up for herself.

We also get to know Linc better in this novel and really get to see the characters being to support each other, yet are vulnerable and with some insecurity, yet mature enough to recognize their weaknesses. This book is consistent with the basic high school sarcasm and drama that is really believable and made this series very easy to read.

All in all a very thrilling and captivating read, the suspense of which will make you chomp on your lower lip in anticipation and fear and you’ll keep on turning the pages till you finish it. I furthermore enjoyed how author Lanie Jordan really expressed the ups and downs of relationships, dealing with issues and drama that most teenagers can relate to.

This is definitely a book i would recommend to my teenage nieces. I received a free ARC through LoP via Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: “The Grave Winner” by Lindsey R. Loucks

SYNOPSIS:

Leigh Baxton is terrified her mom will come back from the dead — just like the prom queen did.

While the town goes beehive over the news, Leigh bikes to the local cemetery and buries some of her mom’s things in her grave to keep her there. When the hot and mysterious caretaker warns her not to give gifts to the dead, Leigh cranks up her punk music and keeps digging.

She should have listened.

Two dead sorceresses evicted the prom queen from her grave to bury someone who offered certain gifts. Bury them alive, that is, then resurrect them to create a trio of undead powerful enough to free the darkest sorceress ever from her prison inside the earth.

With help from the caretaker and the dead prom queen, Leigh must find out what’s so special about the gifts she gave, and why the sorceresses are stalking her and her little sister. If she doesn’t, she’ll either lose another loved one or have to give the ultimate gift to the dead – herself.

Leigh, a 15 year old high school student is dealing with the recent death of her mother and she is doing her best to cope. What amazes me about this novel is that it really goes into interesting details about how a teenager rise to cope with the death of a parent. Leigh being the heroin of this story, is strong, self assured and will do whatever it takes to keep her mother from coming back from the dead like the recently departed, yet reawakened Prom Queen that everyone in her school was mooring as well. WHOA……..talk about the walking dead. Anyway who wouldn’t be freaked out by that and would want to make sure that a recent family member stayed buried.

However Leigh has a best friend named Jo , the relationship between then two of them is humorous, loving and even sad at times as they interact during the book. Leigh, like a normal teenager is mourning her mother the best way she knows how and finds some solace in her best friends older brother Callum (Cal) who is being really nice to her. After finding out that the HS Prom Queen has somehow come back from the dead, Leigh heads to her mothers cemetery with a few her her mothers possessions to bury in her grave to make sure she stays there. In the midst of burying her mothers possessions, Leigh has an encounter with a cute boy named Tram who tries to warn her against doing such a thing, but Leigh does it anyway.

Ugh!!!!! I’m so trying not to give spoilers and its so hard…….however. Leigh and her entourage tries to figure out why the dead are coming back to life and why all of these strange things are happening in Krapper. Leigh has to battle paranormal entities whom are after not only herself, but her family and friends as well.

Who would have known that death can really come back to haunt you? This was a really interesting book to read as I loved the twists and turns that the author took in the plot. The heroin, Leigh was very strong and could hold her own and there was a little love triangle going on in the background of the book, which actually is typical high school issues. The characters are believable and interesting to read as well as the plot was a very much unique as this was a different type of paranormal book for me. However I overall enjoyed the book and would recommend it to others to read especially if you like books were there are walking dead and other supernatural beings. Overall it was a great debut novel and I’m actually looking forward to reading a sequel to this as the ending sort of hinted at the possibility of another book.

Jett unlocked the door and entered to switch off the silent alarm. I didn’t move from the spot until he peered out again with a quizzical look. “Are you coming?”
I shook my head. “I don’t feel comfortable with this. What if she finds out?”
“She won’t. She lives in Florida and asked me to personally take care of it.” He winked. “Which I will—literally.”
“We can’t. What if the neighbors see us?”
He pulled me inside and closed the door behind me. It closed with a loud bang. I regarded him, shocked by his boldness. Jett dropped the bag and turned to face me.
“Who says we can’t?” His eyes had that dangerous look I had first glimpsed the day we had sex on the beach. The one that always promised a sizzling time. The one that didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. “First of all, we’re her realtors, Brooke, and it’s in her contract that we enter the house in her absence at our convenience. And second, what are you afraid of?” He raised my chin and his lips came so close I could feel his sexy breath as his voice dropped to a whisper, “After I win, I get to choose where and how I take you. What if I want it here? Will you deny me?”
His finger curled around the buttons on my business jacket as he opened them one by one. One button and then another until my thin blouse was exposed. “What if I told you that the only reason I brought you here is to have sex in the pool, on the beach, in the backyard, or on the pool table?”
“Thanks for your honesty. But it doesn’t matter, Jett, because you haven’t won yet.” It took me all my willpower to push his hand from under my blouse.
“Having you twenty-four hours just for myself sounds too tempting to let you win. You know that, right?”
“People who reach too far are the ones who fall from the greatest height.” My smile matched his cocky grin when all I wanted was to get this over and done with so we could have sex, anywhere, everywhere.
“Brilliant people like me never fall.”
